Why You Should be Watching “Girls”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

For those of you who have been living under a rock, HBO recently came out with a new show last year called Girls.  It follows the lives of four girls in Brooklyn, who are just out of college and struggling to come to terms with their newfound adulthood.  It’s both painstakingly awkward and shamelessly truthful— throw in a little (actually, a lot) of humor, and you arguably have one of the best shows to come across TV in a while.  It also won a couple Emmys and Golden Globes, so, yeah— critics like it too.  So what makes it so great?

1. Hannah (aka Lena Dunham) is a breath of fresh air.  As the creator/writer/main character of the show, Hannah’s quirky humor and constant mishaps are infectious.  No matter how many cringe-worthy moments we witness (and believe me, there are a lot), one can’t help but be drawn to her vulnerability.

2. It’s relatable.  “So I calculated I can survive in NY for the next 3 days, maybe 7 if I don’t eat lunch” –Hannah.  Whether they’re losing jobs or breaking up with boyfriends, the characters feel like your hipster best friends.

3. The boys.  Because it’s just as much about them as it is the girls.  Between Hannah’s borderline-psychotic love-interest and Marine’s stage-5 clinger boyfriend, they may just make you think twice about the guys you go to school with.

4. It Makes Culture Reference You Understand.  The humor in this show is targeted towards our generation— like that time Hannah totally quoted Missy Elliot in the middle of an argument.

5. It’s progressive.  Girls manages to appropriately tackle issues such as abortion, sexuality, STDs, and drugs (topics that don’t seem to fit into a comedic show) in a way that almost seems groundbreaking.  It approaches these topics in both a bold and different manner that just works.

6. Did I mention that it’s funny?
