Out With the Old & In With the New: 8 Ways to Get Ready for Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Winter creates some bad habits, especially for those of us living in the Northeast. Spring is finally here and it’s time to revamp, revive, and renew for the new season.

Clean out your closet.

My rule is, if I haven’t worn something in over two years, it’s time to toss it unless it’s something sentimental or special. Give back this spring by donating to a good cause or swap clothes with friends!

Take inventory of your friendships.

With the excitement of college, constantly meeting new people, and the endless homework we all seem to have, sometimes certain friendships can be put on the back burner. With the start of the new season, take some time to think about how you can be a better friend, where you’ve dropped the ball, and who has not been a caring and supportive friend for you. That friend who always has an excuse for why she can’t hang out, weekend after weekend, dinner after dinner? Might be time to stop putting so much effort into the friendship or try talking to her about it. Reflection is really important. Think about some things you could work on as a friend and who is worth it to spend your time with. Say thank you and show your friends how much you appreciate them being there for you.

Reach out to someone you haven’t in a while.

Call your old friend from high school who you haven’t seen since last summer, send a hand-written note to your grandparents, text your cousin you haven’t seen for years… connecting with people you no longer see on a daily basis can be such a great feeling. Just letting them know that you’re thinking of them and that you care is one of the best ways to brighten someone else’s day.

Assess your diet.

It’s really important that we think about what we are putting into our bodies. Think about what you’ve been eating and what nutrients you may be lacking. Make a plan to give your body the nutrients it needs to flourish. With spring comes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, so make a plan to add these into your diet.

Write down a list of three bad habits you want to break this season.

With our busy schedules, it can be a real challenge to just slow down and reflect. Think about what bad habits you’ve been wanting to change and make a conscious effort to make a real change. Remember those New Years resolutions you made a few months ago? Check in to see how well you’ve been keeping up with them. My friend puts a list of goals on her mirror so that she sees them every morning while she’s getting ready for her day. She reminds herself of why she’s working so hard in school and what she wants to accomplish. Having concrete goals can keep you on track. Taking the time to think about what you really want to change can speed up the process of changing.

Try a new workout.

Grab your friends, and head to that cool studio you’ve been wanting to try! I love experimenting with new workouts because I get so bored repeating the same workout over and over again. Many studios offer student discounts and free first visits. Make a day out of it by grabbing lunch after with your friends!

Get a facial.

Our skin faces all sorts of problems over the course of the long, long winter. Treat yourself to a well-deserved facial to prevent future breakouts, clear out your pores, and help boost your glow.

Clean out your computer.

I’m constantly deleting old files and documents after turning things in. Cleaning out your computer will not only make it easier to find documents and files, but it will also give you a sense of organization. Keeping all of your downloads and files can slow down your computer which is something none of us collegiette’s have time to waste on! I like to save files that I might want in the future on Google Drive, so that they aren’t taking up space on my hard drive but I can still access them if I need to down the road.

Emily is a junior Communications major at Boston College. She loves all things health & wellness and is very involved on campus. In addition to being a writer for Her Campus, she is also involved in Women in Business and Student Admissions Program, and she is a Barbour Brand Ambassador. In her spare time, she can be found catching up on the news via the obscene number of publications she checks each day, sweating it out at SoulCycle, or enjoying a meal with friends.
I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
