3 Ways to Make Food without an Oven

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It can be difficult to make your own food in college when you don’t have an oven. And while many people have meal plans, that doesn’t necessarily mean you always want to eat in the dining halls. Sometimes it’s nice just to stay in, wearing pajamas and enjoy a calm day in the room. Well, for those of you who want to cook your own food sometimes, here are 3 appliances you can use instead of an oven.

Rice Cooker

This is a great appliance to have because there are so many different foods you can make with a rice cooker (besides just rice). And, you can buy it for as little as $12.98 at some stores. Some of the foods you can make include pasta, banana bread, pancakes, and cooked veggies. It is so easy to make entire meals using this one tool. Plus, there are tons of recipes online to give you inspiration for a delicious meal when you don’t want to walk all the way to the dining hall.

Griddle

A griddle is perfect for making Sunday pancakes or French toast. But besides these obvious delicious breakfast foods, you can also use a griddle to make other meals. A few of the many meals you can make are fajitas, grilled cheese, quesadillas, griddle burgers, and even cookies. Basically, just turn on your griddle and let it spark your meal imagination. Plus, you can get one for a price as low as $18.96 at Walmart and other stores.

Microwave

This is probably one of the more common items college students have, and for good reason. It’s convenient and can do a bunch of things like heat up leftovers or make hot water for tea. But, it can also be used as a substitute for an oven when your dorm doesn’t come with one. While it may not allow you to make everything an oven can make, it sure can do a lot. Some of the yummy foods you can make in a microwave are cookies, mug cakes (essentially a mini cake or brownie), omelets, mac & cheese, muffins, and so much more. There are a plethora of recipes online for you to enjoy food for weeks.

College is a great time to experiment with different, economical ways to do things. With these appliances, you not only learn how to make food for the four years you’re in school, you learn tricks for life. Plus, if you are trying to be healthier or eat smaller portions, this gives you a way to control your own meals. Whatever your reason for making your own food, these three appliances can give you more options than the dining halls.
