The Humble Italian Soda

As someone who has to watch their caffeine intake, I’ve had to get pretty creative when it comes to my fun drink habit. One glorious result of this creative endeavor of mine has been discovering the joys of Italian sodas.

It’s pretty simple as far as coffeeshop drinks go; just sparkling water mixed with flavored syrups. I first tried one at Seven Brew; a “fizz,” as it’s called there, and I’ve been hooked since.

At Seven Brew, I often simply take various energy drink flavors and translate that into a fizz, my favorite being the “Brew Berry” — blue raspberry and strawberry — or throwing mango, blue raspberry, and lime flavors together. This option, paired with their wide variety of flavors available sugar free, has recently pushed Seven Brew to the top of my list of coffee shops.

At The Brew, a campus coffeeshop at Augustana College, they also serve Italian sodas, which is wonderful for me as I can use my Viking Bucks on it, but may be bad for my sugar intake… oops! To continue, I love to throw together raspberry and vanilla flavors in my Italian sodas at the brew, but really, you can get one with almost any flavor. I’m also always partial to strawberry.

Not only are these becoming increasingly available, they’re so easy to make at home. If there’s one thing my mother always keeps stocked at my family’s house, it’s Torani syrups and various sparkling waters — so easy for me to just throw together any time I’m craving a sweet drink.

If you haven’t tried one yet, what are you waiting for?
