Music Is Escapism:

If you know me, you know that I’m probably sitting at a desk, tapping away at my computer and drinking green tea. My headphones are likely on, and I’m either listening to some sort of audiobook or music.

But if you really know me, you’ll see that I’m the most myself when I am in my own little world, wandering around campus, seeing the wonder and such everyday things. With my headphones on, I feel like an explorer, a wanderer, perhaps a curious little fairy.

Sometimes you’ll see me pull a digital camera out of my pocket and take photos around campus like it is the first time I’ve ever seen these things.  I still am in awe of Old Main and how beautiful it is every time I walk past it. I still stop on the bridge and I overlook the slough every day.

Music is my favorite form of escapism, especially paired with wandering and finding small sanctuaries where I can breathe.

So here are 3 artists on my current go-to playlist that help me escape and feel a little bit more magical.

Ella Red:

I’m a big fan of her current discography, especially her upcoming music.  She recently released a song called ‘Aphrodite’ and as an Aphrodite devotee, it makes me feel very in tune with myself and my emotions. Her use of storytelling really captivates listeners and emirates them into the music.

Sparkbird:

An artist I very recently discovered, but I’ve quickly become a fan of.  His music feels like it’s full of wonder and emotion. A personal favorite of mine is ‘Minor Holiday.’ Which was used in a lot of edit videos on TikTok in the last year. It gives me a reminder to feel whatever is happening now, but remember that things are constantly changing and whatever feels heavy at this moment it will not matter much soon.

Shayfer James:

I once saw him in concert while he was opening for Will Wood and he said that people typically know him for songs that are on their DND playlist. His music feels very cynical and fantastical. At times tackling themes of current events, but also tackling topics like love and death. Definitely an artist that is fitting for an adventure. A personal favorite of mine is ‘Tombstone Road.’

With all of these artists I have yet to uncover a song I haven’t enjoyed at least a little bit.

Enjoy!
