How to Combat the “Sunday Scaries”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

Whether or not you have an 8 am class to wake up for on Monday morning, the dreaded “Sunday Scaries” impact us all in college at one point or another. For me, it is typically right around this time, when classes are in full swing, and I am diving into an abyss of coursework that I forgot about until- you guessed it- Sunday night. So, in order to combat this, and prepare for the next week ahead, I have created a list of five things to help get me in the proper mindset to get charged for the bright days ahead.

  1. Self-care: Do a face mask; take a hot bath. Spend time with family and friends. Watch some Netflix/Hulu etc. Do some things that will help you destress, relax, and unwind. Let go of the stresses of the week before; this is a brand new week full of opportunities.
  2. Write it down: Whether it is in a planner, a journal, or just in your notes app, plan the week ahead. Write down all the assignments and when they are due, as well as schedule time for yourself. I always create a time for me to just be alone with my thoughts and write about what I hope for the next week to look like.
  3. Read: You can read anything. Find any article, tweet, or Facebook post and read about what is going on in the world. Or, pick a book off of your shelf, and read a few pages. This will help you sleep at night as well.
  4. Reduce your blue light: Along with number three, reducing the blue light before bed can help your brain wind down, which in turn helps to create a better night’s sleep. Try to finish up working on your homework at least 30 minutes before you try to go to bed.
  5. Eat: This is important. When I transition to a new week, I always eat some of my favorite foods that night for dinner. It helps to remind me that I lived through another week, and I reward myself for doing so with some comfort food.

This list could go on forever, but these are the five most important things for my wind down into the next week. Try these things in your next Sunday night relaxation, and see what you like. Change what you don’t. These are not the end-all-be-all list of how to help move you into Monday, but these things are what help me to prepare myself for the week ahead, so I wanted to share the tips with you all. Now, go forth and conquer the next week ahead of you, and remember: you got this! You can conquer whatever you keep your mind to because you are a badass!

Hi! I’m Christina. I am a senior at Augie :). I joined hercampus here because I want to help promote such a fantastic organization, as well as talk about/photograph important events that should be talked about in the news. I want to bring attention to topics, as well as have the conversations that need to happen. Plus, I love women supporting women!
