How To Make Those Resolutions Stick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

We all know the start of a New Year means resolutions. As the ball drops you tell yourself this year is going to be your year, right? But what happened to last year’s resolutions? It’s that time of year again (Early February) that is known for gym membership cancellations and other resolution failures. Well, let’s say that this time around you actually do want to achieve those goals (like forreal, forreal). These simple steps will help you stay organized and sane all while achieving your goals for this new year of opportunity.

1. Get a friend

Getting a friend to be your accountability partner will change everything. This works especially great for workout related goals. Now you don’t have to rely on your own will power but you have another like minded person to hold you accountable. When you are feeling weak, they will be there to motivate you at your worst. Whether this be working out, school or socially, an accountability partner works wonders!

2. Prioritize

Make a list of the tasks that you need to complete and put them in order of their importance to your life. Our lives tend to be cluttered of things that add minimal quality to our life. Think about what is most important and work on those things first. This also applies to extracurriculars. If you find yourself overwhelmed by overinvolvement then reflect on which activities give you joy and only do those. When it comes to school reflect on what is taking up your study time. If that means missing a night out so that you can wake up early the next morning to study that might be a sacrifice you have to make.

3. Journal / Planner

A planner is great for remembering what exactly you have to do. Schedule your day so you can visualize your achievements. Journaling your feelings is a great tactic to help you target your emotions. You could be more stressed than you think, and this will impact your productivity levels. Sometimes, all it takes is perspective to move past a mental block in your life. Write down your progress by tracking your goals. Then, you can look back on them and see what you have achieved when you feel less motivated.

Have patience with yourself because no one is perfect. You will mess up more than once but the key is getting back on your feet as quick as you can! I hope these three tips will help you to slay the new year and achieve the goals you have always wanted to. I believe in you!
