How to Make the Most Out of Graduating in December

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

As temperatures start dropping during these winter months, spirits start rising for those collegiettes sealing their college years with commencement in December. College graduation marks the end of long nights spent reading hundreds of pages and typing dozens of papers, and signals the arrival of new opportunities waiting to be claimed. For many college graduates, May is the time for celebrating the last four years of hard work and determination. However, earning a college degree in four years is becoming less and less popular as students enter college with credits earned in high school or take on an extra semester to finish up their studies. Whether you’re graduating a semester early or a semester late, here are four options for making the most out of graduating in December.

1. Get a head start on the job huntBecause many college students graduate in May, the job market is more competitive. Graduating in December can give you a head start on scoping out employment opportunities, making connections and landing a job before many students even get a chance.

2. Gain experience in the spring with an internshipMany students take on an internship before graduating, but being an intern after you graduate can also be beneficial. Being an intern with a degree is not ideal for many graduates, but it gives you more experience and a starting point to possibly move up in a company.

3. Consider your optionsChecking out the job market after graduation is the typical route for graduates, but the spring is the perfect time to look into other options before plunging into the real world. Take this time to explore other options such as applying to graduate schools or volunteering with a non-profit organization. By the time May rolls around, you’ll feel comfortable knowing you researched alternatives.

4. Take some time off for yourselfMany businesses expect a large pool of graduates to pick from in May, which means more employment opportunities. Getting a head start on the job hunt is efficient, but the spring could be the last chance for personal growth before starting a career. Take up a new hobby. Learn another language. Travel. The opportunities after college are endless!
