What The Heck Is Oil Pulling and Should I Be Trying It?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

We’re all on the same page, is oil pulling really worth the hype?

Oil pulling is an age old practice that’s been used for thousands of years to reach a better wellness balance. But lately, it’s become all the rage.  All over the internet, not just Pinterest or Facebook, people have been trying this method with countless testimonials to how wonderful this practice is and how we all need to drop what we’re doing and try it.

So what do you do? Typically, once you wake up you’re supposed to take a tablespoon of oil (sesame, coconut, or sunflower) and swish it around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes about 5 times per week. By the end of the process, the oil is supposed to be loaded with toxins and bacteria extracted from swishing. This alternative method, which is also promoted by many other physicians and dentists, has been claimed to whiten teeth, prevent cavities, strengthen gums, cure bad breath, and just benefit your overall health.

Sesame oil vs. Coconut oil:

Ususally doctors and physicians recommend using sesame oil for its nutritional and anti-bacterial properties (it’s also cheaper). On the other hand, many people are advocates for coconut oil because of its better taste, and if you’re swishing that stuff around in your mouth for 20 minutes it better taste good!

Should we all be practicing oil pulling?

It’s up to you! Being healthy is always important but it’s also good to know your body and decide whether it’s good for you! Since oil pulling is a holistic method, do your own research based on your personal health before trying oil pulling. It’s not the same for everyone! Many testimonials recommend swishing slowly, otherwise your jaw will get crampy and sore. Also, a tablespoon is just a suggestion. If that’s too much and makes you want to gag, you don’t have to swish that much! And even though 10-20 minutes seems like an enormous amount of time, check your Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and by then you’ll be done!

Keep in mind that oil pulling is not a substitute for brushing your teeth. It should actually be an addition to that! And also : DO NOT SPIT IT OUT IN THE SINK OR THE TOILET. You will clog your drains when it solidifies!!
