You may recognize her from the advertisements you have seen for the Mast General Store, but now it’s time to meet the model herself: Kate Herman!
Kate is a Public Relations major and second semester Junior from Boone, North Carolina. Kate has worked at the Mast General Store in Boone for over five years, but started modeling for their advertisements last year. Recently, an advertisement of Kate’s for the Mast was featured in “Southern Living” magazine.
When Kate first began being featured in the ads she said it was, “Kinda cool, kinda weird,” and would send the pictures to her mom. Kate also noted that her advertising professor pulled up one of her ads in class last year which she said was somewhat awkward and that random people recognize her and will talk to her about the advertisements (especially boys). However, Kate is not as phased about seeing herself featured now and claims to be a “walking advertisement.” Being a Public Relations major, Kate says she has helped behind the scenes and with ideas for the ads.
There are 10 Mast General stores in the United States with stores increasing every few years. Kate claims that the most popular items sold include Patagonia, rocking chairs, and candy. Kate’s favorite thing she owns from the Mast is her Patagonia clothing. The best part about working at the Mast? “They’re really good to their employees,” Kate says.
Aside from her modeling and work at the Mast General Store, Kate is the Greek Relations Chair for Sigma Alpha Omega, president of Lamda Pi Eta – the academic honor society – RUF, teacher for the App State Swing Dance Club, and previously modeled for the Career Development Center. In her free time, Kate enjoys running a lot because she and her best friend run half marathons together, going to the Fire Tower Trail, and eating at either Proper or Basil’s. Her favorite things about Boone are the people and the ability to go outside and do something whenever you want.
Kate’s final thoughts? “Mast is a good place.”
