As a college student, no matter what year you are, you have a lot on your plate. And sometimes it seems like it’s impossible to finish the whole thing.

From experiencing homesickness, learning to make new friends, getting used to living on your own, to simply becoming more independent, essentially you’re learning how to take care of yourself in every aspect of the sense. You’re growing up for once and for all and that’s scary – exciting – but scary.

I recently experienced firsthand why I need to make sure I’m taking care of my health. Apparently I wasn’t eating enough and I ended up fainting in line at a local restaurant (ironically). Making sure you are getting essential nutrients is a crucial piece of maintaining your health. But eating right isn’t the only way we need to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves. We need to make sure we are taking care of ourselves mentally, socially, physically, spiritually, emotionally and financially. Without balance in each of these areas, I think we’re missing out on all of our potential.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to accomplish these right here on campus. Stepping out of your comfort zone and reaching out to friends, organizations, and mentors can be prove to be priceless in the long run. Obviously there is no exact, precise way you should live your life – there’s no checklist of how to be your healthiest, happiest you. And since we’re on our own now, it’s up to us to find out how to do that for ourselves.
