Celine Dion: Coping with a loss

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albizu chapter.

On February 23, the singer and actress Celine Dion offered a concert at Las Vegas, where tears came as an image of the soul. I mention this because as we all know, she lost her husband and also her brother on the same week. In fact, her husband died on January 14, 2016 and her brother two days after, on January 16, 2016. Curiously, the funeral acts for her husband took place just where they married each other, 21 years ago.  Well, Mrs. Dion had been more that strong keeping up with all her concert tours interviews and families’ reactions after both deaths. However, during the concert that took place at Las Vegas, the emotional part supplanted the logical part because she started crying after singing “All by Myself”.

In one moment during the concert, she shared with her public a few pictures of him, Rene Angelil.  For her, he was the man that gave life to her career and gave her that special motivation to keep going, concert after concert. These words she shared, reflect the importance of him for her: “I understood that my career was in a way, his masterpiece, his song, his symphony,” the text read. She also shared the next paragraph: “The idea of leaving it unfinished would have hurt him terribly. I realized that if he ever left us, I would have to continue without him, for him.” She said that now that he is not physically with her, she feels him even more present and made a letter for her public naming the importance of the support from his public nowadays and how he impacted her life in a positive way. The last paragraph of the letter says the next message:

“René is the only man that I have known all my life. He always made me feel that we were always on our first date. Isn’t that amazing? Never talking bluntly and always impressing himself in a soft and gentle way, we were one. And nothing has changed. We will always be one. You know, I might not hear his voice yet, but I talk to him, I think of him all the time. I feel and I know he hears me. One way or another, I know he will give me a sign for his approval or not. And now, I can feel that he’s telling me to zip it and start singing. Thank you so much. Thank you so very much for being here tonight.”

“The show must go on”, the rock band Queen song track said, but for Mrs. Dion, the show needs to be in pause. The American Psychological Association on its article “Grief: Coping with the loss of your loved ones” (2016) says that overcoming a loss may lead to prolonged periods of sadness or depression. So, Mrs. Dion, you have to be careful.  According to the reading, the key to overcome the loss is to have social support and healthy habits. Those are the recommendations Mrs. Dion.  Otherwise, there are“social solutions”, in some way. The personal recommendations to overcome a loss are the following:

·         Talk about the death.  Don’t deny that it is a natural process.

·         Accept how you are feeling and when you feel it most.

·         Take care of the family members who are still with you.

·         Research about the topic and get involved with associations or support groups.

·         Remember the good times together.

Mrs. Dion, don’t forget that your public loves you and wants to see you healthy, strong and beautiful as always. Don’t let a loss change you, try to overcome it positively.  There are a lot of good psychologists and professionals on the United States and also in Puerto Rico . Keep in mind that he will always love you, no matter where he is.
