In high school, being a freshman means you are at the bottom of the totem pole. You were always waiting for the next year when you would be older and closer to graduation. But in college, it’s quite the opposite. Freshman year is the best year, and most of us wish we could be a freshman in college forever. Why though?

1. Everything was new & exciting.

College is different from high school in so many ways. Everything is bigger and better, and you have so much more freedom. There are so many new experiences to look forward to. Your first football game. Your first date party. Your first time making all your own decisions… You can stay out as late as you want. You can skip class if you want. You can eat nothing but junk all day if you want and then regret it later.

2. You lived within 1 mile of all your friends.

When you live in dorms, you’re surrounded by people you know. You become friends with people in your dorm, so there is always someone to hang out with. And even if you have friends in other residence halls, it’s not a far walk (or bus ride).

3. Living on campus was super convenient.

You can get up 20 minutes before your class starts and still make it. You don’t have to worry about game day traffic and how you’ll get to and from the game. 348-RIDE would take you home after a night out. Food was also less of a worry. The Strip is right there for you to get food, groceries, and shop.

4. Classes were easier.

While adjusting to college academics can be a bit challenging, the classes really are the easiest you were going to get. Most of them didn’t even require much time spent doing homework because  a lot of the information you had already learned in high school.

5. You can get away with stuff.

Whether you like it or not, you’re still viewed as a baby still learning the ropes of college life. And while it’s annoying at times, it comes in handy. Professors tend be more lenient – you could be late a time or two because you don’t know your way around campus. You might even get extra time on an assignment because you’re still adjusting to BlackBoard. And, when you have a rough night, people were way more understanding because of your freshman status.

While it would be great, we can’t stay college freshman forever. Luckily, there is still plenty to look forward to after that first.

I am from North Carolina.I am currently a junior majoring in Marketing at UA.
My name is Reilly and I am a rising junior at the University of Alabama double majoring in Political Science and American Studies with a minor in Public Relations. I hope to get involved in politics after school and then attend law school. In my free time, I love to binge watch Netflix shows, go to the beach and hangout with my friends.
