Things I Learned In College That I Didn’t Need A Degree For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Alabama chapter.
  1.  Get rid of anybody who makes you feel like you are hard to love. They aren’t the people you need in your life.

  2. Your leggings can be worn for all occasions and anyone who disagrees is just a negative shadow you don’t need in your life.

  3. Call your mom; she wants to hear from you and she loves you.

  4. Talk to your grandparents as much as you can too. Life is so short and each day we get is a blessing.

  5. Your friends will disagree with you. It is inevitable. Just don’t let it ruin your friendship.

  6. Microwavable dinners don’t make you any less “domestic”. You’re just busier than others.

  7. If you do have time to cook that is also ok, as long as you’re eating.

  8. When someone gives you a compliment, take it.

  9. When people act like they don’t care about you, believe it. Actions speak louder than words.

  10. Life is not a competition and don’t let some ridiculous professor convince you otherwise.

  11. People will talk about you and it doesn’t make you any less of a person. If anything it speaks volumes about their persona.

  12. Do not fear new relationships because, of the idiot who didn’t give you a straight answer your entire freshman year. Or any idiot ever. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start anew.

  13. Think highly of yourself. If you don’t show others you’re worth it, nobody will know.

  14.  Do not use sex as a measure of your self-worth. You are so much more than that.

  15. Your life looks 98% better on social media than it probably is. Try and live in the moment instead of looking at it behind an iPhone. Memories will sustain us for a lifetime.

  16. Quit acting like you have forever. So make friends with that person, say something you might regret, and eat that damn slice of cake before somebody else does.

  17. No means no. The word “no” doesn’t always need to be followed by any form of explanation. If someone argues otherwise then they are the problem.

  18.  Maturity isn’t deleting somebodies number, it is leaving it there and choosing to take the high road.

  19. Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts (thank you Winnie the Pooh).

  20. Your family still loves you even if they don’t call you every day to remind you.

  21. For the love of everything holy spend your money on groceries and not the bar this time.

  22. Crying is nothing to be ashamed of; you are a good person and you will make mistakes.

  23. Some of these mistakes will cost you friendships.

  24. It is okay to have little indulgences; we are human and not wired to be perfect by any means.

  25. Stop saying you have “daddy issues” like it is something positive you want to label yourself as.

  26.  If he hasn’t made you a priority by now, chances are he won’t.

  27. One word responses via text message are nothing you need to panic over.

  28. Music really can alter your mood (please steer clear of The John Mayer playlist on your bad days),

  29. Please always say you are sorry to the people you hurt while you were hurting. You never know how much of a difference you can make.

  30.  Encourage others to be positive and seek change. The world is already enough of a negative place, don’t add on.

  31. Opinions are literally the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability whatsoever. Don’t be fooled by others opinions.

  32. Not everybody has the same heart as you and if you believe that you will end up terribly disappointed.

  33. Do not adopt a pet with someone who is merely temporary in your world. I cannot stress that enough. It will not end well and you will always think of the “what if’s”.

  34. Pride is a spiritual cancer that very few have mastered.

  35. We will meet a lot of temporary people in these years. Don’t worry if that girl you met during rush never talks to you again, it’s inevitable.

  36.  The ugly truth is that so many people are in love and not together and so many people are together and not in love.

  37. Sleep until you see double digits on the clock doesn’t make you lazy, just don’t make it an everyday thing.

  38. Always keep cash on you because you’ll need it when you least expect it.

  39. Don’t live in the past, you cannot change it. Live in the moment and focus on the future.

  40. “Ring by spring” is truthfully an unidealistic way of life that some have adopted. This time is to focus on you and to better yourself, not to pick the next boy you see as Mr. Right.

  41. Don’t be afraid to go out, even if it’s on a Monday. Life is too short to live with FOMO.

  42. Be active on campus and in your community. Make yourself known as the shining star you truly are.

  43. Take care of your body and mind, you only get one. If you need to go to the doctor or counselor, don’t be afraid to.

  44. Travel the world, study abroad, open your mind to new experiences and different cultures.

  45. It is completely okay to watch your series on Netflix while drink a bottle of your favorite wine in bed.

  46. Make sure you get enough sleep or it will come to bite you in the butt.

  47. Find something you love and make it your career. Too many people get stuck doing something they loathe their whole life, don’t be one of those people.

  48. You’ll meet people from all walks of life, understand that and don’t let it be a bad thing. Others can be a plethora of knowledge as well.

  49. Never give up. No matter how hard something is or how awful you feel, keep fighting and keep pushing through. It does get better.

  50. These are supposed to be the best years of your life. Live it up because it’ll fly by before you know it.
