Brief History: Alabama Basketball

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Alabama chapter.

When college sports fans talk college basketball conferences such as the ACC, Big East and Big Ten are usually the first to come to mind. The Southeastern Conference is generally known for college football, with the exception of Kentucky. Alabama trails Kentucky with the most SEC Championship Titles, with six as compared to Kentucky’s 28.

Under former Head Coach Mark Gottfried, the Crimson Tide was ranked number 1, for a short time and appeared in the NCAA tournament that year. Since 1975, Alabama has appeared in the NCAA Tournament, with eight Sweet Sixteen appearances, and one Elite Eight appearance. Since 1973, Alabama has appeared in the National Invitation Tournaments 11 times, with a 21-14 record.

Head Coach Anthony Grant has been with the Tide for the three seasons (2009) after coaching VCU for four years. In Grant’s second year he led the Tide to finish first in the SEC west and second in NIT.

So far this season, the Tide’s record is 20-11 overall, 12-6 conference. Alabama Junior guard, Trevor Releford is this year’s leading scorer with a high of 36 points against the tough triple overtime loss to LSU. He is also the man behind the buzzer beater against UGA.

If the Tide continues winning, it looks like UA could be a real contender for the NCAA Title this March—Alabama is predicted to succeed in March Madness.
