7 Reasons Your Work Squad Is Your Best Squad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Alabama chapter.

Going to college most likely means getting your first few internships and (if you’re lucky) working in your dream field a little bit before you graduate. When you get into the upper levels of your career, you might find yourself surrounded by like-minded, passionate people who you can always count on. Here are 7 reasons these people are The Greatest People You’ll Ever Meet.

1) You share the same interests/goals.

You’re typically on the same track for your major. You’re all going into the same job field. So long as competition isn’t too fierce, that’s already a talking point for great #SquadBonding.

2) You can always count on them to pick up a shift or bring you some caffeine.

Did you forget about a paper that’s due at midnight? Did you wake up with a wicked hangover? Is your bestie from home in town and you really just want to gab with them all day? Someone from your squad is sure to pick up your shift short notice so you can cram for your final the next day or sleep off the stomach flu you contracted from that questionable frat bro. Not to mention when you’ve been working a particularly long shift and are longing for the sweet decadence of creamy coffee, you can count on someone swinging by work with a cold one. (A coffee that is. Don’t drink on the job.)

3) They make great workout buddies and are always up for a few drinks after work.

Getting to the gym is personally one of the greatest trials of my day. Luckily, with a fitness-committed work squad, they’re literally your reason to get out of bed in the morning. It’s so much more fun going to the gym with a group: you always have someone willing to do an ab workout, or chit chat on the stationery bikes, or go hard on the treadmill. And after a long day, Wine Wednesday is a trillion times more fun with your peeps from work.

4) They understand how important your work is to you.

Unfortunately, your friends may not always understand that you can’t go out to pre-game Wimbledon because you’re working the late shift or you can’t taco-brunch with them because you work until lunch. These are the sacrifices you are willing to make in order to get into your career field. You can’t always just drop work for something that’s more fun, and you realize that. Your work squad is always appreciative of what you do, and will always forgive you for bailing on movie night when you pick up some extra work to get noticed by the boss. They support you.

5) They’re always down for some hot gossip about workplace drama.

The groupchat is always blowing up with the latest work drams. The tea is always on, and it’s always boiling hot. You can count on your squad to fill you in on the latest hot goss. Didn’t work last weekend? Don’t worry, they’ll update you before you walk into work Monday.

6) There’s a cool mix of personalities you can’t find anywhere else.

Face it. Your sorority sisters are pretty much the same. Your friends from home are all pretty similar. But your friends from work are from all different backgrounds. Whether they’re a musician or a cheerleader or a part-time bartender or a frat bro or a filmmaker or whatever, you are all there for the same reason. And because of your shared love for the field you’re in, the differences you may have let stop you from getting to know someone better in the past are just a sweet bonus to the cool people you work with.

7) Coming in to work when the whole squad is working is soooo much better.

It’s Saturday night. No one really wants to be at work, not when you can be out partying or curled up in bed eating pizza bagels and watching Netflix. But these people make work so much more fun. The vibe when you come in on a Saturday night or a Monday morning are the same: it’s the people that make the work fun. It’s the people you’re glad you’ve met, and you’ll know for the rest of your life if you’re lucky.
