Living on your own for the first time can be super strange and intimidating without the help of your parents every step of the way. There are a few things that I have learned and done in the last few years that have made the transition to be on my own, a little easier. Buying and taking care of plants has single-handedly made any space I live in feel homier and livelier. That being said, I feel as I have some expertise in recommending which plants were the easiest to upkeep and take care of.

Aloe Vera

Aloe is arguably the best plant you can own. It has many benefits, while still being incredible easy to take care of. Also, aloe is incredibly prone to propagating itself and create little baby aloe plants if managed well. As far as watering goes, aloe plants really only need to be watered once a month to be maintained, making it perfect for the average college student

ZZ Plant

These plants are great because they are easy to take care of and are great for decoration. ZZ plants immediately make your space look livelier and more welcoming. The big, waxy leaves make for sunlight to bounce of and lighten any space. A lighter space has proven to prevent depression and negative emotions, which can be common when living on your own for the first time.

Snake Plant

The snake plant is the best natural purifier. This is the plant I have the most of because it makes my space feel fresh and clean. These plants are super forgiving when it comes to light exposure, so they adapt to mostly any space they are placed in. Like the aloe plant, this plant easily propagates itself, which makes it simple to grow your indoor plant family.

Pothos

Pothos is such a fun plant to have in a college space. It is so effortless when it comes to maintenance and makes any room look earthy and approachable. Pothos is also easy to propagate into smaller pots to fill more space. My favorite decoration piece to make my space more friendly is taking beautiful and unique glasses to put my propagated pothos in.

Spider Plant

Just like ZZ Plant, the spider plant is a great plant to have to act as a natural air purifier. They are easy to take care of and are forgiving if you forget about them for about a week or so. This plant is one of my favorites because, like Pothos, it is a trailing plant and is easy to propagate.
