On April 21st, Netflix released a new tv show based off of the bestselling autobiography written by Sophia Amoruso, Girlboss. The storyline takes place in the early 2000s with Sophia, a misfit young adult who is lost in the world, who discovers her love for fashion with a single jacket. Within this journey, she learns how to run her own business and all of the bumps in the road it takes to know success.

The story starts with the ever-sassy Sophia being fired from her job in retail, then deciding to do a little retail therapy shopping at a thrift store. In her adventures of thrifting, she stumbles upon a beautiful leather jacket. Being the sharp, confident, young adult that she was, she managed to bargain down the price to a much cheaper price and told the clerk that he should know what his stuff was worth. The moment Sophia put on the jacket, a sense of empowerment rushed through her. She walked the streets of San Diego with so much confidence and even stole a rug for her run-down apartment. It wasn’t until dinner with her dad where she loses her confidence due to him telling her she was failing at life. Sophia went home to find an eviction notice on her apartment door, feeling as if the whole world is out to get her.

Sophia then gets the brilliant idea to sell her jacket that she had just bought on Ebay. This was the start of her passion for fashion. She ended up selling the jacket for hundreds of dollars, able to pay her rent and stay in her apartment.

Throughout each struggle Sophia had faced, whether it be a bad review, fashion repeating itself, her hernia, falling in love and the consequences that came with the boy, Sophia is the definition of a Girlboss.

But what is a girl-boss? A girl-boss is someone who is confident, and who isn’t afraid of a challenge. Sophia has taught us the hard journey to being successful and finding ourselves, and has inspired us to be our own girl-boss. Because if we don’t believe in ourselves, how can we succeed?

The show has a solid 13 episodes full of sassy attitudes, a killer soundtrack, some of the cutest clothes you will ever see, and relationships to envy. It’s a short and sweet season, one I highly suggest watching. After bingeing the heck out of the series, I felt as if I could take on the world. Sophia started with nothing and now is the CEO of her own company, Nastygal.

Sophia is a Girlboss. I am a Girlboss. Are you?
