Engineering Fraternity Expelled Due To Racist Videos

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Akron chapter.

Syracuse University has recently announcing the permanent expulsion of the engineering fraternity, Theta Tau, as an offensive video has been released.

A video had surfaced of members of the engineering fraternity using slurs to define different minority groups as a part of the “new member process.” This video caused the chapter to be permanently expelled from the school.

According to The Washington Post, there are reports of a second video surfacing of a member of the fraternity mimicking the sexual assault of a disabled person. In the video, one fraternity member sits in a wheelchair wearing a helmet while another member forces him to perform mock oral sex. According to the video, it shows other members perform the role of the passive bystander, which leads to egging them both on.

One thing to remember here is that this is not an organization that is apart of the same Greek community as other fraternity organizations. There is a significant difference between fraternities and honor societies, which this is a branch of. While the Greek community is facing their own problems among the issues of hazing, racism, etc., these are two different communities.

Luckily, the members of this organization are facing their own charges as their videos showed them being racist, homophobic, and expressing other forms of oppression and violence. Their actions will not go uncalled for.
