Adelphi’s Relay for Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Relay for Life is an event that many universities hold on their campuses. It is an event that raises money and brings awareness to the American Cancer Society, which fundraises money to help find a cure for cancer. Adelphi’s Relay for Life was held last Friday, April 10th in the Center for Recreation and Sports, and to say it was a success would be the understatement of the year. In it’s fourth year here at Adelphi, students, faculty, and other participants raised a grand total of $75, 095.61! Beginning in late evening and going until the morning after, participants were able to enjoy some food, games, and music all night long, all while raising money for the American Cancer Society. In addition, everyone in attendance was able to listen to cancer survivors as well as caregivers give heartwarming speeches about their experiences, and how their lives had been affected by cancer.

The event started with the opening ceremony and moved on to having those who have survived their battle with cancer walk a lap around the track. After this, the caregivers of those with cancer walked a lap around the track. Seeing everyone who has had their lives affected by cancer stand up to it and walk in honor of their hardships was moving and inspiring. And although everyone was walking around the track the entire night, the most moving walk around was definitely when everyone in attendance walked around the track silently, in honor of those we have lost to cancer. The lights in the CRS were turned off, and the light coming from the Luminaria bags illuminated the room, which gave the room a peaceful ambience.

All in all, Adelphi University’s Relay for Life was a complete success, and it brought a night of laughter, fun, and fundraising to the students of Adelphi. With over $75,000 raised in total, we are all looking forward to seeing the Adelphi community top this next year!
