This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

Today I’m interviewing my wonderful friend, fellow Aberdeen uni student, and politics enthusiast Susi Carta.

Name: Susanna Carta

Age: 20

Studying: Politics & International relations

From: Cagliari, Sardinia

HC: Hi Susi! Let’s start off with a pressing question; why Aberdeen?

SC: Am I allowed to say because it’s free (laughs)? I knew I wanted to study in English and preferably in the UK and, as we know, Scotland is free for us EU students which is obviously a big plus. It just kind of happened really!

HC: You are totally allowed to say that! Now, what made you decide you wanted to study Politics and I.R.?

SC: I have always been really interested in the politics of the European parliament. I have also always loved discussing international issues, so the combination seemed perfect to me!

HC: Wonderful! Susi, a little birdy has told me that you participated in the European Youth Parliament. How and when did you get this opportunity? What does one even do in the EYP?

SC: I believe it was in 2013, they were doing a call for it at my school. We were given a topic that you would normally see discussed in the European parliament which we had to write a resolution for. I first started off as a representative for our school and after my team won the conference, we were chosen as national delegates. We were then divided into different committees, within which we again had to discuss and resolve an issue. All committees then met in an assembly to present their solutions. It was the job of other committees to challenge them, and our job to defend them. This is what creates the debate in the parliament. Afterwards, the committees vote for the solution to pass! It is basically an EU parliament simulation.

HC: Wow that sounds like an amazing opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in international politics! Naturally, such career also comes with a lot of travelling. What places would you like to travel to?

SC: I would love to go to Greece, because it’s a beautiful place of course, but also because its issues are so prominent in the current European political situation. I would also love to experience Sziget festival in Budapest.

HC: Agreed, Sziget does sound like the place to be! Thank you for your time Susi!
