5 Struggles of Having Unicorn Hair

I’m a natural blonde, and have kept my hair the same colour (maybe adding a few highlights here and there) for most of my life. Though, over the last couple of years, I have begun experimenting with some not-so-natural colours, including pastel pink, pastel purple and my boldest hair colour to date: magenta/midnight with blue/turquoise!

Since I began colouring my hair, I have been given great nicknames like ‘Care Bear’ and ‘Rainbow Hair’, and I’ve loved being able to change my hair according to my style or how I feel! But, having colourful hair is not always sunshine and rainbows (figuratively speaking). Here are 5 struggles that I (and many others) have to deal with when having unicorn hair:

  1. Bleaching your hair is the most painful thing every unicorn-to-be will have to endure!

Anyone who has ever had their hair bleached before, will understand the pain that must be endured in order to achieve your desired hair colour. It starts off as a slight nip, gradually turning into a burning sensation and by the end, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be in floods of tears having convinced yourself that all of your hair has fallen out. But fear not! Make sure you get your hair bleached by a fully qualified hairstylist and your hair will not fall out! Besides, no pain, no gain.

  1. The dye goes EVERYWHERE.

And I mean everywhere! Towels, bedsheets, clothes and even my finger nails have been marked by the curse of the midnight blue dye.

  1. You NEVER want to wash your hair / you ALWAYS want to wash your hair.

This third point may be slightly confusing to some non-unicorns. If you’re lucky enough to achieve a lovely pastel colour in your hair at the first attempt, you will never want to wash it, because every time you do, you witness your beautiful mane fading into nothingness. On the other hand, if your colour is not as pastel pink as you had hoped and it is more like an actual rainbow has been placed on your head, you may find the colour much harder to fade and so you will resort to washing your hair an unseemly amount of times per week to get that perfect pastel shade.

  1. People think it’s ok to stare at you in a blatantly obvious fashion!

All I can say to this is, although it may be irritating and cause you to wonder if you have something up your nose, they are clearly just jealous and in awe of your amazingly beautiful unicorn-ness!

  1. Some people will never understand your decision to become a unicorn.

Typical comments from non-believers:

“Oh, for goodness sake, what have you done to your hair?”

“Well, it’s definitely… out there.”

“Will you ever get a job with hair like that?”

“I prefer your natural colour.”

To all my fellow unicorns, don’t be put off by what these people say! Colour your hair the way that you want to colour it, because you know you can own it!
