Since I was 15, I have dyed my hair a variety of colours and have never looked back to my natural hair colour – black. I’ve always liked doing fun things with my hair; I have been cutting my own hair since I was 14 and love learning to do different hairstyles too!

I realised I’ve done almost every colour that is easily accessible – apart from blonde and orange because I wouldn’t suit those colours, and pink because anyone who knows me knows how much I despise that colour. Over the years, I’ve found what I like and don’t like (though I pretty much like any colour that it ended up, even if it doesn’t go to plan!), here are my favourites since I started university!

September 2018 – Brown

I came to university with brown hair – meaning everyone who has ever met me at university has never actually seen me with my natural hair colour. I honestly loved this colour and I await to do it again. It’s nice, simple and unlike the rest of the colours I’ve tried, is a lot more natural!

October 2020 – Green

Third year was when I drastically changed my colour MANY times, where it’s become a running joke with my close friends that every time I see them, my hair is a different colour. I started off third year attempting to dye my hair green. It is not a popular hair colour of choice, which I quickly found out when trying to find green hair-dye in Boots and Superdrug – finding a very limited selection. Unfortunately, it didn’t go fully to the ashy-green I was dreaming for, but I still love how it turned out!

November 2020 – Dark Blonde

The green quickly did not last long, fading into a blondish colour, which will probably be the closest I will get to being a blonde! I had this colour for quite a while (or at least to me, it was), thinking I would wait for it to fade lighter so it would be easier to venture into my next colour!

February 2021 – Purple

I turned to purple next, a colour I hadn’t attempted before so I thought I would give it a shot! Previously, I had always been warier of dying my roots, so I had only done purple (red, blue and green) at the ends of my hair, rather than my whole head. But why not give it ago dying the whole thing?

March 2021 – Red

Coming up next is what I think is my favourite colour I have ever done – red. I consider myself quite a colourful person, not just with my hair but with my clothes too. It made sense for me to choose red as it suited a lot of clothes I had too and allowed for colour blocking! I think I had red for the longest time because I liked it that much, where I re-dyed it red quite a few times to keep it up. It meant I had a lot of different types of red, including a more wine-red and even almost a rose-gold!

September 2021 – Blue

Last but not least, is my current hair colour – blue! Weirdly enough, this was my second attempt to dye my hair green (my favourite colour), and after using bleach and hair dye that was called ‘Midnight Green’, my hair came out blue. This was not a tragedy as I still love it, but definitely took me by surprise!

I will continue to dye my hair funky colours. I find it fun to do and it brings me a lot of happiness to be able to express myself in a colourful way. I feel it brings not just my clothes to life, but my character. Perhaps one day I will go back to my roots, but for now, I’m sticking with colour!
