Escape to the Country

Escape to the Countryside

Being a student in the Granite City can be monotonous at times. If it’s not the rain getting you down, then it’s the fog that dampens your spirit. Sometimes all that is needed is a change of scenery, switch the grey buildings for some greener pastures and get outdoors! Here are some of the best places to escape to chosen by a local gal (me!).

1. Haddo House

Grab a pal with a car and take a jaunt into the countryside. Snuggled in amongst the vast fields of the North East is Haddo House – an idyllic location for short walks and cute picnics. Haddo offers seasonal events from Easter egg hunts to the annual Christmas Fair, meaning there is always something on or coming up when you go and visit. It is the famous duck pond which attracts most people; they must be some of the best-fed ducks in the country! There is a cute café and a gift shop on site as well that sells everything from ice-lollies for the warm summer days to a classic hot chocolate to beat those winter chills.

2. Bennachie

For those who are more adventurous pack your walking boots and head to Bennachie. This hill packs a punch with its forest entrance building to a rockier peak. Pack some sandwiches, a flask of soup and head off hiking for the afternoon! The views from the top on a sunny day are one of a kind and there is nothing better than some good fresh air and exercise after spending hours in the library.

3. Stonehaven

Of course if you’re not looking to leave the warmth of your car, then take a trip to Stonehaven. This is a cute costal town with a castle that hosts one the best chippies and a fabulous ice-cream shop. Make a day of it, get some pals (hopefully ones with a car…but you could always get the train!) and make your way south of the city along the coast. The weather can be deceiving so make sure you pack warm clothing as the wind carries a real chill! On a cooler day why not grab a fish supper and enjoy some of the freshest fish you’ll ever taste, or if it’s warmer get yourself to Aunt Betty’s for one of their famous ice-creams!

These are just a few places that make studying in Aberdeen a little less grey!
