Dear Pappy- Thank You For Being My Hero

Dear Pappy,

My entire life you have been the one man that I can always count on; the man that I look up to. You have always been more to me than just my Pappy. You are my hero. There are no words to describe the appreciation I have for you. I am a believer that God puts special people in our lives in order to cheer us on and encourage us to become the person we are always meant to become. You, Pappy, are one of those special people.

You are the one person that has always believed in me and taught me that if I work hard and dedicate myself, that I can follow all my dreams. No matter what life throws my way. No matter how many tough times you have gone through you have always worked hard and dedicated yourself in order to provide for all the family. Believe me, none of that has gone unnoticed or unappreciated. You taught me that I am stronger than I think. When there are times in life that I want to give up you, I can’t, because I will get there and that I always had you to support me along the way.

You taught me that when someone is being mean to me- well I probably can’t say what you actually would say- but the gist is that haters always hate it more when they don’t know that they are getting to me. If I have a smile on my face that will get to them more than them knowing that they have hurt me.

You’re always honest, which at times people may not like. Yet as you say- why tell lies to someone that is actually wanting advice? You take no nonsense off of anyone which I have found out on many occasion’s due to my cheek, but I know you love me even when you’ve been giving me in trouble. This, for me, was a lot growing up because I was a spoiled little Princess.

I know that no matter what happens, despite the arguments or fights we have had, that if I ever need you you’ll always have my back. You’re the person that every boy is scared of when I introduce them to the family. Probably because they know how much I love you and how much your opinion matters to me. Sorry, Dad, Pappy is way scarier than you!

You are such a history buff, especially when it comes to the Zulu’s, the World Wars, or about your family which you take great pride in. You have taught me so much so that I feel honoured when I can sit and talk to you about them. and listen to you tell your friends about how proud you are. Though, as my Mum and Grandma always taught me growing up ‘don’t believe everything your Pappy says’. This probably came from the fact I justified everything by saying ‘my Pappy told me that’.

Your cluelessness when it comes to Facebook and how to work your TV never fails to make me laugh. Even though I complain about having to fix it for you, I am always happy that I’m the first person you turn to when it comes to helping you out.

You’re the first person someone phones when they need something whether that is a lift at stupid o’clock in the morning (i.e. me needing you to pick me up from town), or even when something has gone wrong. You put everyone else first and go out of your way to help when needed. I can never thank you enough for everything you do for me. I also know it’s never thank-you that you want. It’s rather for us to come up to yours in the morning for a cup of tea and a cake. Well, in the case of picking me up, it’s usually me buying you a McDonald’s on the way home.

You have been there for me when I lived in England, to the move to Scotland, and up to Aberdeen. You’re the person that I go to when life is hard and all I want is a cup of tea and a cake.

I don’t think you realise the impact you have on my life and on the lives of other people. I could go on and on about everything I love about you. You are always on my side and if I ever need something you’re just a phone call away. You are what everyone wants in a Pappy, you’re a friend, a father, and lastly, you’re our Pappy. Grayson. Harrison, William and I couldn’t ever ask for a better Pappy than you. I look up to you and can only hope that I will continue to make you proud of me and become the woman you have always known I will become.

I love you Pappy.

Much love,

Your Little Spoiled Princess
