The 10 Funniest Moments from the Emmys
 ( Kelsey Davidson)
Amidst the constant rain and darkening skies, the move from our hardly here sunshine to winter is one of my favourite times of the year for three reasons: Halloween, Christmas, and the fact that it’s award show season. So what better way to celebrate than a rundown of the funniest moments from the Emmys on Sunday night?Â
- Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the season with a hilarious monologue, where he asked, “Are we ready to make The Emmys great again?” This wasn’t the only Trump joke of the night. Despite Trump himself not being in attendance, he was a huge presence at this year’s Emmys. Kimmel explained how “television can also tear us apart” and used Trump as an example, saying he wouldn’t be running for president if it wasn’t for television’s influence. Kimmel then turned the blame to The Apprentice producer, Mark Burnett, and that thanks to him, “we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore because we’re living in one.”
- One of my favourite moments of the night was when Kate McKinnon won her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series – Saturday Night Live. McKinnon proved that despite taking Hollywood by storm following her recent success in The Ghostbusters remake, she’s just like us, and pulled her acceptance speech out of her bra. Overwhelmed by the win, she still managed to give an adorable and amusing speech where she poked fun at herself for being too emotional to form a coherent sentence. Â
- In what was probably the best speech of the night, Julia Louis-Dreyfus made us laugh and then made us cry as she accepted her fifth Emmy in a row for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for her role as Selina Meyer in Veep. She joked about how her friend – Frank Rich – and she, tricked David Mendel into running the show, and then how they all tricked Morgan Sackett into producing it. Dreyfus took it upon herself to personally apologise for the current political climate – blaming her show for tearing down the wall between comedy and politics. She joked that what started as a satirical comedy now felt more like a sobering documentary, and promised to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it. Dreyfus then beautifully dedicated her award to her father, who sadly passed away two days before the award ceremony.Â
- Like most people with a Netflix subscription (or those who use somebody else’s), I’ve fallen in love with the kids from Stranger Things. Seeing them hand out the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made by Kimmel’s mum on their bicycles was a highlight of the show. Like any good mother, Kimmel’s gifted some of our favourite celebrities with hand-written notes alongside their sandwiches, including Cuba Gooding Jr. and Amy Schumer. She told Cuba she loved him in Snow Dogs and sang Amy’s praises – wishing that Parks and Rec would come back, proving the compliments were actually meant for Amy Poehler. Â
- Leslie Jones was recently a victim of what can only be described as an online hate crime when some of her private information and nudes were leaked. However, she owned it at The Emmys, courageously and hilariously bringing light to a subject that isn’t talked about enough; the harassment of female celebrities online. When accountants from Ernst and Young got up onto the stage to explain the difficult process of keeping The Emmy secrets hidden, I thought we were going to be in for a rather boring few minutes, but Jones stole the scene when she thanked them for their “hard work.” She asked them – since they’re good at keeping things safe – to put her twitter account in the vault. She pointed out that nobody cared about Emmy secrets, saying, “ya’ll using your skills to protect best voiceover on a French sitcom. Meanwhile I’m butt naked on CNN.” Jones then explained that she just wanted to feel beautiful, and asked, “can a sister feel beautiful?” Â
- Sterling K. Brown set a running gag and made women everywhere swoon at The Emmys when he adorably said, “contrary to popular belief, I got the hottest chick in the game rocking my chain” about his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe during his speech for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie. Brown wasn’t the only one to put a twist on the famous Jay Z lyrics during the show, though. While accepting the award for Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie, Courtney B. Vance dedicated his award to his wife, saying, “to the woman who rocks my chain, Angela Evelyn Bassett, this one is for you, girl.” Steven Moffatt also got involved with the joke when he accepted the award on behalf of Sherlock Holmes: The Abominable Bride (Masterpiece) for Outstanding Television Movie by thanking his wife for not only rocking whatever that was, but also producing the show.
- Moffatt gave a small shout out to the British people in the audience, or those viewers who were crazy enough to stay up into the small hours of the morning watching live (like me) when he thanked the BBC during his speech, whom he said “we love above all bakery.”
- Aziz Ansari wittily tackled Hollywood’s diversity issue while he presented the award for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special after being rushed off the stage before he got a chance to speak during his own win. He thanked his parents before going on saying to he’s voting for Trump and recommended that all Muslim and Hispanic nominees should be removed. Which he said would have been easier if they were at The Oscars, making a nod to the #OscarSoWhite. He joked that his parents now needed to be removed and that America Ferrera wasn’t fooling anyone by changing her name. Â
- Kit Harington and Andy Samberg came out with some hilarious soundbites while presenting in a bid to make it into the promo for next year’s Emmys. These included Samberg saying “no, I won’t kiss you Kyle Chandler,” Harrington saying “yes, I will kiss you Kyle Chandler,” and Harrington proposing to Samberg.Â
- Matt Damon and Kimmel continued their “feud” when he came out after Kimmel lost in his category, snacking on an apple, and asked Kimmel if he had won. When he reluctantly answered no, Damon asked if that meant he wasn’t going to get a trophy. Damon continued to tease the talk show host by expressing how humiliating it must be for Kimmel to have to continue presenting for the award ceremony after having just lost.Â
All in all, it was a night of humour, satire, and of course, celebration of great talent. What were your top 10 moments? HCXO
