There are so many real life role models that we here at HC look up to but this week Natascha’s turned to the world of fiction to find just a few of those strong minded gals who taught us some pretty necessary life lessons through some of our favourite books and movies.
Eleanor Roosevelt’s brilliant quote:
‘Nobody can make you feel inferior without their consent.’ sums up the message of this movie. Elle Woods might come across as spoilt and ignorant, but at Harvard Law School she discovers her abilities and that she has intellectual potential as well.
Nobody wants to be rejected and ostracized. That happened to Josie in high school. If you want to win back the heart of a guy who knew from the start that you’re a great person, you have to tell him the truth no matter how embarrassing or painful it is. Her article was worth publishing: she gets her first kiss!
Mia learns that being a princess means more than just having good manners and to be gentle to people. She gains self-confidence and discovers that Michael, is the one because he saw her ‘when she was invisible.’ While Josh just shows interest after her makeover and due to the fact that she’s a real princess.
You have to leave your room and break free even if people see you as ugly or strange! By doing that, Penelope gains independence and makes friends with people.
Following your dreams might disappoint your parents and there will always be people who will judge you. Sometimes you have to open up a little more and give that arrogant boy a chance to get to know you better.
She has all the necessary qualities for being a good journalist: curiosity, persistence, honesty and an eye for the human interest behind the things.
Messing someone’s life up doesn’t make you any happier or a better person (even though Regina can be very evil!). As Cady realizes ‘All you can do in life is solve the problem in front of you.’
21-year old Sophie is diagnosed with cancer. But instead of giving up, she enjoys life and makes the best out of it.
She takes the challenge of teaching a class of students from a poor and criminal background. The movie shows why we need more teachers like her because she sees her students as individuals facing difficult problems in their lives. Their journals help them to find their voice and to cope with their personal struggles.
- Matilda Wormwood from Matilda
Her family despises her and so books seem to be the only way to escape from their cruel behaviour. But Matilda doesn’t stay passive, she uses her intelligence and telepathy to change the world around her.
