10 Feminist Halloween Costumes to Celebrate Girl Power!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

I absolutely love Halloween and usually begin to think of what I’ll dress up as months in advance. Then I start to wonder – what horrible costumes for women will there be this year? I can’t help but love the Minions, however I really don’t fancy dressing up as a “sexy” one. Yes, unbelievably that is in fact a costume now.

So here are some suggestions of Halloween costumes for fellow feminists!

1 – The Women from Mad Max: Fury Road

One of this years biggest and best girl squads. Mess up your hair, put some old clothes on and chuck on some mud, or maybe just use some make up, and you’re ready to kick ass.

2 – Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl once said “Serena and Blair, they do besties better than anyone.” So why don’t you and your bestie see if you can do just as good a job by dressing up as some of my favourite TV best friends?

3 – Maria von Trapp from The Sound of Music

I remember my Mum dressed up as Maria von Trapp once for a party and I absolutely loved it. It’s a unique costume and bonus points if you play the guitar, or just carry an empty case around – nobody has to know!

4 – The Powerpuff Girls

A 90s throwback to a great girl power group costume. I still watch this show and think these girls will always be good, and also really cute role models.

5 – Taylor Swift’s 2015 VMAs Girl Squad

Taylor Swift will forever be a classic idea for somebody to dress up as, a few years ago I dressed up as T-Swift from her Red album. Why not gather your best friends and be the most glam squad around, just make sure there’s no bad blood when deciding who gets to be who, after all they’re all fabulous women!

6 – Jessica Day from New Girl

Dress as the quirkiest, most adorable teacher Miss Day. Perfect if you want a change, so be brave and get some bangs to go with your cute outfit, glasses and of course awesome phone cover.

7 – Spice Girls

Another 90s girl power group costume idea! There are always rumours that they’re going to reunite so until they actually do, get your own group of girls together and spread the word of girl power.

8 – Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones

Don’t want to dress as a Princess or a Queen? Then be a Khaleesi, you might just have to find a smaller dragon to carry around.

9 – Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked

For theatre fans, why don’t you and your bestie dress as these two wonderful witches? Personally I prefer Wicked to The Wizard of Oz as I think Elphaba and Glinda are better role models and more relatable, well apart from the magical powers.

10 – Princess Anna from Frozen

And finally one of my favourite costumes I’ve ever worn. Seeing as Disney’s latest Princess was named Anna I felt I needed to fulfil my royal duties so for my 19th birthday last year I was truly Princess Anna. Every girl, especially on her birthday, should after all be a Princess!

Hope this gave you some great ideas for cool and empowering Halloween costumes! HCXO<3
