What Is Air Up? The European Water Bottle Brand Has A Fun Twist

The Her Campus National Editors write about products we love and think you’ll love too. Her Campus has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase. All products are in stock and all prices are accurate as of publication.

If there’s one thing the internet has made clear, it’s that you can turn anything literally into a trend — including something as mundane as staying hydrated. We’ve had the Stanley tumbler era, our emotional-support Owala craze, and, of course, the never-ending quest to make drinking enough water feel like less of a chore. But the latest hydration trend might be one of the most intriguing: a European water bottle brand that can make your water taste like mango, watermelon, or even cherry cola without actually adding anything to it.

Enter Air Up, a German hydration brand that’s making waves in the U.S. with its uniquely designed water bottles and scented flavor pods. If you’ve spent any time scrolling through TikTok, there is a good chance you have already come across one — you just might not have realized it. The brand has been around since 2019, when its founders launched Air Up in Germany with 80,000 bottles… and sold out in less than six weeks. Since then, Air Up has expanded into international markets, including the United States in 2022, bringing its unconventional approach to hydration to more people.

Now, the brand is becoming easier to find — and more prevalent — stateside. As of October 2026, Urban Outfitters has started carrying Air Up products, giving American shoppers another place to find the bottles beyond the brand’s own website. And honestly, in a world where our water bottles have practically become style statements, I can see why people are curious.

Here’s what to know about the latest water bottles sweeping social media.

How Does Air Up Actually Work?

OK, this is where things get a little science-y, but stay with me because the concept is genuinely interesting.

Unlike traditional flavored water bottles, Air Up doesn’t put flavoring directly into your water. Instead, it uses scented pods that attach to the bottle’s mouthpiece. According to Air Up’s explanation of its technology, the system relies on something called retronasal olfaction, which is basically how your sense of smell helps your brain recognize flavors.

Here is how it works: You fill your bottle with plain water, attach a scent pod, and take a sip. As you drink, air travels through the pod, picks up its aroma, and carries that scent through the straw toward your nose. Your brain interprets the aroma as flavor, making it seem like you’re drinking something fruity or sweet even though your water itself has not been flavored.

The pods come in a variety of scents, including watermelon, mango-passion fruit, wild berry, and cherry cola. Each pod is designed to provide scent-enhanced hydration for at least five liters of water, according to the brand. There is no added sugar or sweetener from the pods, which could make Air Up an interesting alternative for anyone looking to switch up their usual drinks.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the taste is more subtle than drinking an actual juice or soda. A 2024 Consumer Reports review notes that the experience can take some getting used to, and getting the pod positioned correctly matters. So, if you are expecting a super-sweet sip, you might need to adjust your expectations a little.

Where Can You Get One?

The good news is that you do not have to book a flight to Europe to try Air Up for yourself. You can shop directly through the official Air Up U.S. website, which carries different bottle styles, starter sets, and replacement scent pods. If you would rather shop in person or browse through a retailer you already know, Urban Outfitters also carries select Air Up products.

Urban Outfitters currently lists the Air Up Click water bottle at $39.99, its O Travel water bottle at $49.99, and a three-pack of best-selling scent pods at $8.99.  Prices and availability can change, so be sure to check the listings before purchasing.
