Being a media girlie in college means my life exists somewhere between Google Calendar reminders, half-edited drafts, and random bursts of creativity that show up at the most inconvenient times. No two days ever look the same, but they all revolve around storytelling, connection, and figuring things out in real time. It’s busy, a little chaotic, and very much a make-it-work kind of lifestyle, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m someone who is constantly balancing multiple versions of myself at once. I’m a student, a writer, a PR girl, a content creator, and someone who is always thinking in captions, headlines, story angles, and so much more, even when I am just living my life. My camera roll is a mix of half-finished ideas, outfit checks, random clips I might turn into content later (and some that may never see the light of day), and screenshots of things I don’t want to forget. I live in a space where inspiration does not really wait for the “right time,” so I have learned to catch it as it comes.
Most days, I am moving between my internship, classes, on-campus and Zoom meetings, and creative projects, while also trying to protect small moments of peace that keep me grounded. I love structure, but I also love and live in flexibility. Some days feel incredibly aligned and intentional, while other days feel like I’m building the plane while flying it. Still, I’m learning that this version of my life is exactly what I asked for. You can’t complain that your plate is full when your goal is to eat. It’s not perfectly organized or aesthetically pleasing all the time, but it is real, it is growing, and it is mine.
7:30 a.m.: Slow Start & Gratitude Check In
My day started at 7:30 a.m. with a quiet moment to myself. I filled out my daily gratitude journal, one of the few ways I intentionally slow down before everything begins. While still in bed, I checked my emails and went through my personal and brand social media notifications. It’s a small habit, but it helps me get a sense of what needs my attention and what the day might look like before I even get up.
8 a.m.: Soft Morning Routine & Content Mode
Around 8 a.m., I eased into a slower morning routine, which felt like a small win. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with making blueberry french toast on croissant bread with a side of eggs. It’s a little extra, but it makes me feel like I have my life together, at least for the moment. Of course, I had to vlog it. What’s a media girl without content? I try to keep up with posting on my Instagram Story throughout the day, but realistically, it gets in where it fits in.
9 a.m.: Her Campus Internship Begins
By 9 a.m., I was clocked into my internship on the Her Campus national site’s editorial team, where I serve as the wellness intern. Thankfully, my internship is remote, which gives me the flexibility to integrate it into my day. With such a packed schedule, I balance my internship tasks in between classes, campus commitments, and everything else I have going on.
My workday started with submitting a rough draft I had been working on, then immediately jumping into edits after hearing back from my editor. There’s something about seeing my writing get refined in real time that makes me love it even more. I was sitting on my couch with a candle burning and MTV’s Downtown playing in the background, which is honestly my ideal way to ease into work. I love cartoons in the morning. It’s the only time I really sit down and watch TV, even if it is just background noise.
11:30 a.m.: Library Work & Editorial Meeting
After a couple hours, I headed to the library and logged into my Her Campus editorial meeting. These meetings have easily become one of my favorite part of the week. They give me a behind-the-scenes look into the editorial world, and more importantly, they remind me that I’m not just observing; I am a part of it.
After the call, I stayed in the library to finish an essay for one of my journalism classes before heading to the cafe to meet up with my little. (For context, a “little” is typically a freshman paired with an upperclassman mentor, kind of like a built-in big sibling.) We caught up for a bit before I made my way to class.
2 p.m.: Broadcast Journalism Class & Multitasking Mode
I headed to my broadcast news writing class, which is easily my favorite class this semester, even with the current events quizzes that keep me on my toes. It’s one of the classes that I feel is most aligned with what I want to do, and I genuinely enjoy being there.
Since my Her Campus internship is remote, I’m usually still clocked in during this time. I stay logged in with my laptop or iPad always in my hand while I’m moving around campus, answering emails, making edits, and keeping up with assignments in between moments. Most of my classes are lecture-based, and I review the slides ahead of time, which makes it easier to balance both without falling behind. It’s not always perfect, but it’s how I make everything fit.
4 p.m.: Alumni Networking Zoom
My class ended at 3:15 p.m., and I made my way back to the library a little later around 4 p.m. The most impactful part of my day came right after class when I joined a Her Campus Hampton University alumni Zoom. As PR and Marketing Co-Chair of my campus chapter, moments like this always feel bigger than just a meeting.
We heard from four Hampton alumnae who are now working across the media industry, and they kept it real in a way I did not expect. No sugarcoating, no perfect career narratives, just honesty. I asked about balancing freelance work with traditional roles and how to navigate pivots, and their answers stayed with me. They talked about how easy it is to lose yourself in your career, how demanding media can be, and why protecting your mental health is not optional, it is necessary. One thing that really stayed with me was the reminder to go where you are celebrated, not tolerated.
Being in a space with women who once sat where I am now felt like a full-circle moment. It reminded me that everything I am working toward is possible. As the call ended, I sat for a moment in that in-between quiet, still in the library but mentally somewhere else entirely, before shifting into the next part of my day.
6:30 p.m.: Run Club
That transition carried me straight into run club. I headed out and met up with my friend, Aniya. She used to run track, and I have asthma, so you can imagine how that went. We basically saw each other twice the entire run. I forgot my headphones, but it ended up working in my favor. I ran into familiar faces, had quick conversations along the way, and pushed myself more than I expected. There was something grounding about moving my body after sitting with so many ideas earlier in the day.
9 p.m.: Dinner, Content, & Wind Down
After the run and a very necessary impromptu photoshoot, I headed home, showered, and cooked dinner. I made baked chicken thighs, homemade garlic mashed potatoes, broccolini, and carrots. Cooking has become one of my favorite ways to unwind, and I shared the process on TikTok and my Instagram Story.
To close out the night, I did PR outreach for CNSRD Misfits, a woman-owned clothing brand focused on sustainable, made-for-everywhere designs, including custom pieces and upcycled thrifted apparel, where I serve as the PR manager.
If you’re wondering how I balance all of this, the truth is, I’m still figuring it out. Some days feel aligned, and others feel like I am running on vibes and a never-ending to-do list. Days like this remind me that I am building something. Every draft, every meeting, every late night idea, every to-do list — it’s all adding up. And maybe that is what being a media girlie in college really looks like: not having it all together, but showing up and creating something out of it anyway.
