Summer is nearly upon us, and with it comes summer reading. During the school year, reading for fun can feel almost impossible between classes, assignments, internships, and whatever social plans somehow end up on your calendar even during the busiest weeks of the semester. But summer brings (at least a little bit of) breathing room, which means it’s finally time to tackle that TBR that has been quietly judging you from your nightstand all year.
Whether it’s throwing a paperback into your tote for a beach day, reading by the pool on vacation, or accidentally finishing half a book in one afternoon because you got way too invested in fictional characters (been there), summer is the perfect excuse to romanticize slowing down a little — and to finally pick up the books you’ve been seeing all over TikTok and promising yourself you’d get to eventually.
But there are so many incredible books out there, and only a handful of weeks before it’s back-to-school season yet again. If that thought has you unsure where to even begin, never fear — your fellow bookworms are here.
Here are 12 books for your summer 2026 reading list, recommended by college women — and true book lovers — from across the country. From new romances to obsess over to thrillers to keep you up at night, this compilation has something for every kind of summer reader.
- A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen

This duology is rooted in Norse mythology with an incredibly vibrant female lead, a sexy Viking lover, and perpetual plot twists. I couldn’t put it down.” – Ginger Koehler, University of Florida
- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

This book captures the life story of Henrietta Lacks with empathy and depth. It opened my eyes to ethical issues often experienced when it comes to treating patients in medicine.” – Calista Miramontes, University of California, Los Angeles
- My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
-
Courtesy of Europa Editions “This book was recognized by The New York Times as the best book of the 21st century, and for good reason. Set in Italy, the story follows two young girls as they go through adolescence. The narrator, Lenu, is the top of her class but envies her friend Lila for her beauty. Meanwhile, Lila’s family takes her out of school, leaving her longing for the same level of education Lenu has. The novel, which excellently explores the jealousy and internal turmoil of coming-of-age, is the perfect literary beach read.” – Skylar Boilard, New York University
- Dire Bound by Sable Sorensen

The fast-paced plot kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I loved the unexpected twists that made it impossible to put down. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and addictive fantasy read.” – Isabelle OBrien, Immaculata University
- New Girl in Little Cove by Damhnait Monaghan
-

I really enjoy how the protagonist learns how to incorporate herself into the community and learns how to love herself and others through this journey. A perfect book to sunbathe by the beach with.” – Emma Caldwell, University of Alabama
- Bog Queen by Anna North
-
Courtesy of Bloomsbury Publishing “It’s a perfect, atmospheric blend of genres. It is part mystery, part coming of age, and part adventure. All of the characters are perfectly written and developed, and North balances multiple timelines’ perspectives to create a propulsive read.” – E.V. Beyers, University of Missouri
- Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski
-

- The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

- Variation by Rebecca Yarros

- Why Men Love Bitches by Sherry Argov
-
Courtesy of Adams Media “The author interviewed hundreds of men on dating, and this book is a compilation of the insight. She learned that heterosexual men actually prefer independent, confident women and gives valuable insight on becoming that woman (not just to appease men, obvi). It taught me to not be a pushover, and I think it’s def worth a read for my fellow gals who are struggling with dating men.” – Koehler
- Heart the Lover by Lily King
-
Courtesy of Canongate Books “I blew through this book in a few short hours. Set in a small New England liberal arts college, the narrator (nicknamed Jordan) meets two incredibly smart boys, Sam and Yash. She’s quickly thrust into a complicated love triangle that has the potential to rip their friend group apart as they know it. But, when the book flashes forward years later, they realize their college problems were trivial compared to the devastation they’ll face later on. Lily King knows how to pull on readers’ heartstrings, and the tear stains on my copy are proof of that.” – Boilard
- Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker
-
Courtesy of Mira “This book completely bowled me over. It’s an intense murder mystery with family drama at the core of the story that still provides an insightful social commentary and critique — especially coming out of the pandemic years. It’s nothing like what you’d expect, and it’s everything you want it to be.” – Beyers
