Megan Park’s Sterling Point finally hit Prime Video on Aug. 5, and it’s the perfect blend of mystery, romance, and family drama. The series follows Annie Jacobson, a 17-year-old from New York City who lost her adoptive mom when she was young. Annie and her twin brother, Connor, learn they’ve inherited an island in Canada called Sterling Point from their maternal grandfather they never knew. When Annie goes to the island to learn more about her family and her mom, she’s surprised to find she also had a sister she never knew — and she happens to be on the island, too. Spoiler alert: Spoilers for Sterling Point Season 1 follow. (Big ones.)
Annie meets (read: scares the sh*t out of) Ramona at the end of Episode 1, and quickly puts together that — considering they share a grandfather, and she looks exactly like their mom, Goldie — Ramona must be her sister. Later on in the series, viewers learn that Ramona was conceived at a time when Goldie was separated from Annie’s dad, Steven, and living on the Canadian island. Unfortunately, Goldie died while giving birth to Ramona.
While Annie and Ramona started putting the pieces together, it was obvious that Ramona had a different dad. How? Well, Annie and Connor were adopted by their parents because they weren’t able to have kids of their own. But considering Goldie was Ramona’s birth mother, that meant her dad had to be someone different. Right?
It’s revealed during the season that Joe — a former love of Annie and Ramona’s mother, and the marina owner at Sterling Point — rekindled his relationship with Goldie in the years before her death, and that they were planning on leaving their respective partners to be together and raise Ramona. Ramona even learns that after her grandfather died, Joe became her legal guardian. Ramona doesn’t take the news well, and instead of embracing her father — who has been a part of her life all this time, without her knowing it — pushes him away.
But that’s not where the story ends. In a conversation with Annie later in the season, Ramona learns that her dad, Steven, is colorblind. It’s never mentioned earlier in the series, but from there, viewers learn that Ramona is colorblind, too. It’s a trait that runs from fathers to daughters, and helps Ramona make the connection that Steven is actually her dad. Suffice to say, fans online (including myself) were thrown by the twist at the end of the season.
Ramona’s lineage is honestly just one small part of the entire Sterling Point story, and it’s good. You can watch the full first season on Prime Video now.
