Four years after the novel Every Summer After was released, Carley Fortune fans can now finally see Barry’s Bay IRL. On June 10, Prime Video released the first season of Every Year After, based on Fortune’s No. 1 national bestselling novel. For those who have been waiting all these years to meet Percy, the Florek brothers, and the lake that serves as the backdrop for their entire story, the wait is finally over with Every Year After. But where was Every Year After filmed? Barry’s Bay is a real place, after all. Spoiler alert: Some spoilers for Every Year After Season 1 follow.
Every Summer After and Every Year After are both set in Barry’s Bay, Ontario — which is an actual, real-life town. (This isn’t a Cousins Beach TSITP situation, people!) Fortune said in a 2023 interview, “I grew up in Barry’s Bay. Our house was down a dirt road in the middle of the bush and on the water. I spent my summers much like Percy and Sam — swimming, reading, and when I got older, working in the evenings at my parents’ restaurant.” But despite the story being centered on Barry’s Bay, the crew didn’t actually film the Prime Video series in Barry’s Bay. The series, which filmed between June and October 2025, was mostly filmed in British Columbia — namely, Vancouver and Bowen Island. In 2025, Fortune told Publishers Weekly, “I’m so sick of Canadian places in film and TV standing in for other locations, usually American. But we’re filming in British Columbia, which does not look like Ontario. So, I thought, let’s just let British Columbia be British Columbia: we reset it as Barry’s Bay. I didn’t want them to crop out the mountains. It’s just so beautiful!”
According to Bowen Island Tourism, locations within the island’s Snug Cove, like the Union Steamship Marina Resort, Doc Morgan’s Pub and Restaurant, Tippy’s Cookhouse, and the Lagoon Causeway, were used in the series. These locations ended up becoming the settings for certain scenes at the marina (where Chantal and Jordie fish), Tavern scenes (like where Sue’s memorial is held), and of course, some lake scenes during the season.
While the series wasn’t actually filmed in Barry’s Bay, many of the locales in the novel are based off of actual places in the Ontario town. The Tavern is based on the real-life Wilno Tavern, which is known for Polish cuisine (including, yes, pierogi). And Madawaska Coffee, which is mentioned in the book by its actual name, actually exists in Barry’s Bay, too.
The picturesque town of Barry’s Bay in Every Year After has me inspired to travel, so now that I’ve finished watching the entire season, I may be planning a trip to British Columbia while I wait for Season 2.
