Get excited: The next installment of author Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing franchise, Threshing Day, is hitting shelves on Sept. 29. While it isn’t a full-length novel, this novella will feature the threshing day tales from the perspectives of 13 important characters. But which Fourth Wing characters will Threshing Day be about?
As a reminder, if you haven’t touched the books in a while, “threshing day” is the important (and highly dangerous) day when first-year riders attempt to bond with a dragon. If you’re successful, you come out bonded. If you’re not, you’re either dead or you have to repeat your entire first year. Considering threshing day was only ever shown from Violet’s perspective, readers have been hoping to find out what this day was like for other characters, such as Ridoc (the jokes about how he and Aotrom bonded at threshing are giving me life) and other important characters like Rhiannon, Bodhi, and Garrick.Â
Fans have long held their theories about who would be mentioned in the book, and Yarros is feeding them — albeit not all at once. Since Sept.9, Yarros has slowly been revealing whose stories would be included in the novella by posting quotes from the riders’ dragons on her Instagram and then revealing who said the quote 24 hours later.Â
With that being said, here is the list of everyone whose stories are confirmed to be part of the book so far.
Brennan
“You have yet to earn your first name while your last overpowers it.” – Marbh, Brennan’s dragon
The first character that Yarros revealed to be part of the 13 was Violet’s older brother, Brennan. If it wasn’t for Brennan’s Book of Brennan, Violet wouldn’t have had an easy time navigating her first year in the quadrant, and neither would Mira. The oldest Sorrengail is known to be smart and a bit brash, but what was he like when he was Violet’s age? We’ll finally get to see, and who knows? Maybe we can find out a bit about the mysterious Naolin.
Dain
“Do you still have allegiance to the codex while you ride the edge of Malek’s doorstep?” – Cath, Dain’s dragon
I personally wasn’t sure if Dain would be getting a feature, but it makes sense since he was Violet’s love interest for a hot second, and he’s played a pretty pivotal role in the books so far. Who else is rooting for him and Sloane?
Sawyer
“I will not attach myself to another rider who cannot adapt to loss.” –Sliseag, Sawyer’s dragon
It’s about time we got to see what goes on in Sawyer’s head. The metallurgist is the only one in Violet’s friend group who had to repeat the year, and honestly? Props to him. Based on everything we know about studying at Basgiath, it’s hell, and to survive a first year not once but twice is incredible. Hearing how Sawyer and Sliseag bonded is going to hit extra close to home, considering Sawyer lost a leg at the end of Iron Flame.Â
Imogen
“Would you like me to fly over and slice that sexual tension for you?” – Glaine, Imogen’s dragon
Imogen is a fan-favorite character, and it’s awesome that we finally get to see more of her perspective. Since book one, it’s been apparent that she has feelings for Garrick, Xaden’s best friend and right-hand man, but how did that come about? We might finally get to know the answer.Â
Sloane
Although Sloane hasn’t been outright confirmed yet via Insta, Yarros said on Sept. 14 at the New York Mets Fourth Wing fan meetup game that her favorite perspective to write from was Sloane’s, which seemingly means we’ll get Sloane’s story as well! During her threshing, she still had complicated feelings towards Violet, who she believed may have killed her brother, and in Iron Flame we find out that her signet power is siphoning energy, like Tairn’s former rider, Naolin. Sloane has a bigger role to play in the rest of the series; that much is clear, but what is it going to be? Maybe her threshing day story can tell us.
Xaden
On July 15, when she announced the book, Yarros revealed that Xaden’s story would be part of the novella as well, much to fans’ delight. His POV will also be up on her website for free, just like all the other chapters of his that are out for public consumption. It’s always a treat when we get to see Xaden and Sgaeyl’s dynamic. Seeing how they met and how much Xaden knows as a first year? Yeah, I’m sold.Â
So who else could possibly have a spotlight moment? Only time will tell as Yarros continues to tease fans with quotes before the novella’s Sept. 29 release.Â
