Taylor Swift & Emma Stone’s Friendship Actually Goes Way Back

Taylor Swift and Emma Stone’s long-time friendship was kept pretty low-key for years — until Summer 2023. When Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) came out on July 7, Swifties became convinced the vault track “When Emma Falls In Love” was about Stone. The pair have been friends for almost the entirety of their careers, so there’s a chance Stone might be the Emma in question!

At the New York premiere of her upcoming film Poor Things on Dec. 6, Stone played it coy when a reporter asked if she was Swift’s muse for the track: “You would have to ask her!” she replied. Stone and Swift reunited at the film’s afterparty, giving fans the first pictures of them together in almost 10 years. Their first-ever pictures together, however, date back to when they first met at an award show 15 years ago. Let’s flip through the kind of book that you can’t put down: Taylor Swift and Emma Stone’s friendship timeline.

April 2008: Swift and Stone meet at the Young Hollywood Awards.

After meeting at Hollywood Life’s Young Hollywood Awards, Stone told MTV News that she “listened to some of [Swift’s] music, and I wrote her an e-mail saying I liked her music, I swear. And then we started talking and hanging out.” This is the 2008 version of DMing someone you met on a night out.

December 2009: They get ice cream together in NYC.

Just Jared Jr. snapped pics of Swift and Stone at Baskin Robbins in NYC, dubbing them “Baskin Robbins besties.” That title is an honor, TBH.

September 2010: Swift attends the Los Angeles premiere of Easy A.

Olive in Easy A is arguably Stone’s breakout role, and Swift was there to support her on the red carpet! Sounds Like Nashville reports that Swift tweeted, “Just saw Easy A. Easily, definitely, absolutely my new favorite movie.”

June 2011: Stone reveals she got to hear Swift’s Speak Now album early.

Being friends with one of the world’s biggest pop stars has its perks. Speak Now came out on Oct. 25, 2010, but Stone “was lucky enough to hear it pretty early on,” she told MTV News. “It’s so exciting for it to be out and own the songs instead of just be singing them [in my head].”

Of course, the world didn’t know about the song “When Emma Falls In Love” until Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) was released in 2023, but it’s likely that Stone’s known about the track since 2010. If the fan theories are correct, the pair’s friendship is even sweeter than we thought!

August 2011: Stone presents Swift with an award at the Teen Choice Awards.

Swift won the Ultimate Choice Award at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards, and who better to hand over the surfboard than one of her ultimate besties?

July 2014: Stone attends one of Swift’s iconic Fourth of July parties.

Newer Swifties might not know the lore behind the singer’s Fourth of July blowouts, but Stone certainly does! She attended Swift’s 2014 Independence Day bash in Rhode Island.

December 2014: Swift sees Stone perform on Broadway.

Stone starred as Sally Bowles in the 2014 Broadway revival of Cabaret. In a now-deleted Instagram post of Swift and Stone together backstage, Swift gushed, “Got to see Emma KILL IT in Cabaret last night! Every new project she takes on is even more excellent than her last and it has inspired me since the day I met her 7 years ago.”

November 2018: Swift attends the premiere of Stone’s film The Favourite.

Though there aren’t any pics of the pair on the red carpet, an onlooker told People that Swift and Stone “were chatting up a storm” all night.

March 2023: Stone attends the opening night of the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona.

As an Arizona native and one of Swift’s long-time besties, it makes total sense that Stone would attend the first stop of the Eras Tour in Glendale. She told Vanity Fair in June 2023, “The concert was pretty amazing … I’ve known her since we were 17 and 18, so she hooked me up, which was very nice ’cause I know those tickets are impossible to get.”

She’s a wonderful friend. She blows my mind,” Stone continued. “I mean, the amount of sheer stamina to do three and a half hours and perform 44 songs and to maintain the extreme energy of the audience — I’ve never seen anything like it.”

December 2023: Swift supports Stone at the NYC premiere of Poor Things.

Fresh off the heels of being named TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year, Swift appeared at the Poor Things premiere in a stunning, all-black fit. She posed for a picture with Stone at the afterparty.

Stone and Swift have been there for each other through all of their eras. Here’s to seeing what their next era holds!
