Taryn Brumfitt’s Documentary Hopes to Help Women ‘EMBRACE’ Their Bodies

Taryn Brumfitt, an Australian photographer and mother of three, is raising money for a documentary that aims to change the way women see their bodies.

The documentary project, called EMBRACE, will explore the prevalence of women hating their bodies and what we can do to change that. Brumfitt says that she once hated her body too, and even considered getting a boob job and tummy tuck last year. However, she realized that she didn’t want to send that kind of message to her daughter Mikaela.

On her site, BodyImageMovement, Brumfitt wrote, “How am I ever going to encourage her to accept and love the parts of her body that she doesn’t like without being a walking contradiction?”

In May 2013, Brumfitt posted a “before and after” photo on Facebook, which included a shot of her from a bodybuilding contest alongside a photo of her post-birth body. The unconventional post went viral on Facebook, receiving three million likes.

Brumfitt is now raising money for her documentary project in the hopes of changing women’s attitudes towards their bodies in a positive way. Her goal is $200,000, but as of today the project has already raised $172,138.

“It’s taken a lot of effort, time and energy,” says Brumfitt, “But I can tell you there is nothing better than a.) Loving your body wholeheartedly, lumps and bumps and all and b.) Telling society where they can shove their ideals of beauty.”
