Log into Netflix, practice your Gonggi and Ddakji, and get ready, because Squid Game Season 3 is coming soon. This season is set to release on June 27 and will include six episodes. What will be the fate of the beloved players? Will Junho finally find the island and discover the true identity of the Front Man? And what is the Front Man’s backstory, anyways? Only time will tell the answers to all of our burning questions. Though it’s hard to forget the ups and downs of Squid Game Season 2, some of the details might have slipped your mind. Here’s a quick recap on Squid Game Season 2 to get you up to speed and have you ready to binge the final season.
Season 2 begins right where Season 1 left off, with Gihun at the airport. After a phone call from the Front Man, Gihun decides to not board his flight, vowing to hunt down those in charge of the games. However, the Front Man tells him that he’ll regret this decision.
Fast forward two years, we’re shown that Junho is still alive despite being shot by his brother, the Front Man, in Season 1. Similarly to Gihun, Junho is on a mission to find the island where the games take place, though the people around him remain skeptical of his stories about the games. Meanwhile, Gihun is haunted by what he went through, which reflects in his endless pursuit to catch the Front Man. He enlists a team of men to track down the Recruiter (aka the mysterious man that approaches people to play a game of Ddakji for money). But the Recruiter is clever and evades them, managing to still find desperate people to join his game. We see the last of his character as he finally stands off with Gihun, playing Russian roulette and shooting himself.
Entering the Games Again
While Gihun had seen the last of the Recruiter, he unfortunately had not played his final game. He finds himself face-to-face with guards in a nightclub and is brought to a car. There, the Front Man addresses him through a speaker and Gihun asks to rejoin the game.
Gihun awakes in the familiar bunk room to the eerily cheerful music he heard during his first game. While hundreds of confused players roll out of bed in their green jumpsuits, Gihun knows all too well what is about to happen. Meanwhile, Junho and his team board a boat to search for the island.
‘Squid Game’ Season 2’s New Characters
Season 2 introduced fans to many new characters. Thanos (played by K-pop Legend T.O.P) is a purple-haired, cutthroat rapper that would do anything to win. Not to mention, his one-liners are hard to forget. Hyunju is a transgender woman who was discharged from the military after coming out, though her background makes her incredibly skilled in combat. Junhee is a young pregnant girl in the game with Myunggi, the father of her child with whom she has a rocky relationship. Geumja and Yongsik are a mother-son duo, and Jungbae is an acquaintance of Gihun’s from the outside world. Though, perhaps the most shocking addition to the game is “Youngil,” aka Inho, aka the Front Man. But Gihun doesn’t know the Front man’s true identity, so he unknowingly forms an alliance with him.
The Games In ‘Squid Game’ Season 2
Season 2’s games are especially brutal. They begin with the classic “red light, green light,” and proceed to a relay (featuring Ddakji, Gonggi, Jegi, Spinning Top, and Flying Stone), and Mingle (the musical chairs-esque game). The rest of the games are expected to be shown in Season 3.
The ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Ending
The season ends with an uprising of the players against the guards. After sneaking off to find the Front Man, Gihun is caught and watches as Jungbae is killed. The guards pin him down, leaving the audience unsure of Gihun’s fate and without him ever realizing the true identity of the Front Man. Meanwhile, we learn that a member of Junho’s crew has been purposely sabotaging the search for the island, preventing them from finding it during the season. The final mid-credits scene shows an eerie boy robot, much like the Younghee, the girl robot from “red light, green light,” foreshadowing the next game.
