Selena Called Taylor Her Only Friend In The Industry, So I’m Revisiting Their Sweetest Moments

We all have been following Selena Gomez’s recent drops (right?) and they have been making us so emo. First “My Mind & Me,” the single, came out and then today she hit us with her documentary that shares the name, and it is gut-wrenching.

Hearing about how much the star has struggled with mental health, self-doubt, and her chronic physical illness broke my heart. Gomez deserves better. That’s why we can always appreciate Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift’s friendship — Swift treats her right.

While her song, potential album teaser, and doc drop have us all scrambling to keep up with Gomez’s recent ventures, let’s take some time to stop and appreciate her Rolling Stone interview. You know, the one where Gomez and Taylor Swift once again reaffirmed their undying sisterhood?

Take a break from crying to “Anti-Hero” and toss the tissues you piled up during “My Mind & Me” because we’re about to go over some of the cutest moments in the Gomez-Swift friendship timeline.

Swift makes sure to remind the world it’s Gomez’s 21st birthday.

Way back in 2013, even when she was across the country playing sold-out stadiums for her Red Tour, Swift made sure she gave her bestie Gomez a birthday shoutout. Cancer and Sag solidarity.

“Happy 21st birthday to my friend, and the closest thing I’ve ever had to a sister, @selenagomez!!” Swift Tweeted.

Swift and Gomez slay the MTV Video Music Awards.

The iconic black outfits these two shared at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards had Twitter on the verge of a breakdown. And Gomez was clapping in the front-row to support her girl when Swift allegedly shaded ex-bf Harry Styles.

Swift and Gomez get tipsy at their tea party.

Remember back in 2015 when Swift had Gomez, Ellie Goulding, and Haim over for tea and a good gossip sesh? I can never forget. Their bejeweled outfits and accompanying high-brow decor dominated Instagram feeds.

Gomez is ARSYN in Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video.

2015 was just the year for Swifties and Selenators. The “Bad Blood” music video had an insane cast, and obvi Gomez cameoed as ARSYN. The black latex, the bob, the machine gun? She was basically foreshadowing the Rep era.

Gomez makes a surprise appearance at Swift’s 1989 Tour.

After Swift shocked the crowd on her 1989 L.A. stop with Gomez and sang “Good For You” as a duo, Gomez couldn’t keep in her emotions. After making a guest appearance during Swift’s Speak Now Tour years earlier, the nostalgia was too much.

Swift opens the Grammys and Gomez comforts her.

Once again, our front-row queens always draw eyes and nothing changed at the 2016 Grammys. Swift opened the ceremony with “Out of the Woods” and promptly took home album of the year and pop vocal album for 1989 as well as best music video for “Bad Blood.” Swift thought her performance of “Out of the Woods” didn’t go well, and cried to Gomez, who was seen wiping away her tears and comforting her.

Gomez surprises fans at Swift’s Reputation Tour.

We all know Swift loves a good surprise, and once again she brought her soul sister out on stage for her 2018 Reputation Tour. They performed “Hands to Myself,” and all 60,000 people in the Rose Bowl ate it up.

Swift is Gomez’s “big sister.”

On Instagram Live, shortly after her Reputation Tour appearance, Gomez called Swift her big sister, and it was so freaking cute. “Taylor’s awesome. I love her. She’s amazing. I talked to her today. She’s literally like my big sister, I tell her everything,” Gomez said.

Swift and Gomez open up about their deep connection.

Gomez landed a cover story with WSJ early in 2020, and they got Swift on board to talk about their close friendship. It was the most Swifites and Selenators had gotten to read about their idols’ relationship since they became friends back in the late 2000s.

Swift said, “There has always been this quality of sisterhood, and I don’t say that in a basic way. I knew from when I met her I would always have her back. In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don’t know if I can forgive someone who hurts her.”

Gomez says Swift is her only friend in the industry.

I know. I was so sad, too, when I read how much hurt Gomez has gone through at the hands of other artists. Hearing about how she considered Swift her one, true friend means hope isn’t lost for all the celebs out there. Plus, seeing their friendship in My Mind & Me will warm your heart.

“I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities,” Gomez told Rolling Stone. “My only friend in the industry really is Taylor, so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.”

We all saw Gomez share her love for Midnights, so it shouldn’t be a shock that Swift hyped up Gomez’s new documentary on her Instagram story. I’m sure we’ll hear more about each of their recent projects on the duo’s socials soon.

I’m so glad these two women have each other’s backs. Anytime you’re feeling down, remember that somewhere in the world, Gomez and Swift are probably on FaceTime exchanging recipes and cat pics.
