It’s no secret that Gomez is close with Taylor Swift, who she regards as one of her “only friends in the music industry,” as stated in a 2022 Rolling Stone interview. The plot of the Gomez-Jenner-Bieber story thickened after Gomez defended Swift in the comments of a TikTok posted on Feb. 23. The TikTok captured an uncomfortable moment from a 2017 episode of Drop the Mic, which Bieber was a guest on. When Swift’s name was mentioned on the show, Bieber imitated gagging, a gesture that generated a loud reaction from the audience.
