Selena Gomez’s Comment On Taylor Swift’s Knicks Game Photos Has Fans Confused

Celebrities have been flocking to New York City in droves to watch the New York Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. From Timotheé Chalamet to Larry David, Madison Square Garden has been packed with famous faces — and at the June 10 game, the crowd added another A-lister to its roster when Taylor Swift showed up to watch the game courtside along with besties Alana and Este Haim and Mariska Hargitay. However, it was the online activity of another mega-famous member of the Swiftie squad that really had fans talking. ICYMI: Selena Gomez made a cryptic comment on an Instagram post of Swift at the game, and the internet is scrambling to figure out what it means.

Aside from the game itself, Swift was the talk of the town for Game 4 of the finals. She showed up wearing matching Knicks-colored, punny T-shirts with Hargitay and the Haims, with Swift’s shirt reading, “Stevie Knicks.” She appeared to have a blast throughout the game, cheering and dancing along with the rest of the crowd. And when the Knicks won the game in a historic comeback, she celebrated on the court — even pausing to hug fellow Knicks fan (thanks to her BF, Chalamet), Kylie Jenner. When MTV’s Instagram account posted two photos of Swift reveling in the excitement, fans swarmed the comments section to hype her up. And when they got there, many saw a comment from Gomez right at the top: “lol.”

Those three simple letters sent the internet spiraling. Was she shading her bestie? Simply laughing at the pics? (I mean, Hargitay’s emotionally distressed expression is pretty hilarious.) Or something else? Neither Gomez nor Swift have said anything publicly about the comment, nor have there been any signs that their friendship has been on the rocks. But there is one key fact worth noting in all this: Gomez is a major Spurs fan.

A Texas native, Gomez has made her fandom of the Spurs known for quite some time. On the night of the June 10 game, she took to her Instagram Stories to share that she was watching it from afar — from 3 a.m. in London, to be exact, since she’s in the U.K. shooting the next season of Only Murders in the Building. After her team lost in a shocking buzzer-beater moment, Gomez posted on her Story again. “Happy for NY but my heart breaks just a lil lol, she wrote. “It’s ok. I’m happy for the teams!”

So, it’s possible that “lol” was a combination of the many feelings Gomez may have been having: amusement that her friend was being silly and living her best life, FOMO from not being part of the action, and disappointment that her team didn’t win. As with most ambiguous IG comments (because let’s be real, we’ve all left one), the world may never know!
