In The “One Thing About Me” TikTok Trend, Creators Reveal Their Quirks

Here’s one thing about me: If there’s a new or emerging TikTok trend out there, I will find it. I will research and analyze it incessantly, spend hours watching hilarious examples from creators all over the world, and report about it TikTalk. It’s what I do. I can’t help it. At this point, I’d even go so far as to claim that covering TikTok trends is one of my personality traits. Now, much to my delight, the “One Thing About Me” TikTok trend has creators revealing their ongoing habits, and the viral moment is reminding me that it’s OK to celebrate your defining traits — no matter how ridiculous, silly, or serious they are.

One thing about me is that if you shoot me a text, I will either respond within minutes or days. There is no in-between. Plus, I’m a night owl, I rarely know what time it is, and am always in the mood for dessert. We all have our little quirks, and if you, too, have something to shamelessly proclaim to the world about your personality, you’ll love the “One Thing About Me” TikTok trend. All you need to do is think of a personal trait to poke fun at, tap into your inner comedian, and complete the prompt “One thing about me is…”

What is the “One Thing About Me” TikTok Trend?

When I first saw the phrase “Summer Background Jazz” trending on TikTok, I automatically assumed it was due to Gen Z finally getting over sad girl fall and prepping for hot girl summer (or coastal grandma summer, if that’s more your vibe). However, I soon learned that thousands of creators are using a jazzy soundbite to produce fun videos where they reveal “one thing” about their personalities.

The “One Thing About Me” trend is fun, slightly sarcastic, and similar to viral moments like Kim Kardashian’s “It’s Never Been My Thing,” the use of text overlay here is key. Plus, the trend requires creators to get creative with their actual style of writing, which you’ll see is dry, abrupt, and of course, funny. Oh, and the random jazz audio — which has been used in over 85,000 videos and counting — creates a strange, yet serene contrast to this otherwise chaotic trend in which the text overlay is pasted over creators’ faces (and takes up the entire frame).

In the “One Thing About Me” trend, creators reveal their funny quirks.

Similar to how I honestly admitted my TikTok obsession, night owl tendencies, and undying love for dessert, creators are shamelessly revealing their own quirks in a direct, yet clever way. The trend is simple: You’ll start with the phrase “One thing about me is…” and finish with a handful of comical sentences poking fun at what it is.

For example, one thing about @elenarennie is that she’ll always be a procrastinator. One thing about creator @kitkeenan is that she’ll always ask for extra sauce on the side at restaurants, and @maremuh is guaranteed to wear this foolproof outfit for every important function no matter what. One thing about TikToker @bryniebooo is that she’s always down to hang out even when she’s busy, @cassidymags ends up sweating no matter what the temperature is, and one thing about @_bzlife is that she’s a self-proclaimed “sports bra girly” whereas Becca is never wearing one again

There are many ways to approach the trend, whether comical, serious and straightforward or somewhere in between. For example, @ella_elbells is devoted to eating yummy salads and @avajules will never give up laying on the floor even if there’s a couch or bed nearby. Creator @ilovenapsandcountryboys says “One thing about me is I will get the ick” followed by “Use the wrong emoji? Ick. Too nice? Bye,” and other blunt, sarcastic statements that are characteristic of the trend. TikToker @anneclairepatterson’s version says, “One thing about me is that I have a catastrophic mindset. You haven’t texted me back? I think you died in a car crash. I’m already planning your funeral” followed by other similar, dramatic statements.

When drafting your text overlay, the goal is to be as blunt as possible.

Once you’ve saved the (random) jazz audio and considered which “quirk” you’re sharing with the world, it’s time to draft the text overlay, which is arguably the most important aspect of the trend. To take your version of “One Thing About Me” to the next level, try writing in the same style that the creators have used. You’ll start by saying “One thing about me is…” and fill in the rest of your story using brief, blunt statements and sentence fragments.

For instance, @willtynan0’s relatable version says, “I love to dilly dally. Take me to the store and I will wander down every aisle. Just meandering. Mosying about. Taking my time. I am a big fan of lollygagging. If I am not in a rush I will not rush myself.”

In another fabulous version, TikToker @sarahbarberrrr says, “One thing about me is that I will be keeping up with the Kardashians. I will always keep up. New episode? I’m there. New TMZ photos? I will be the first to see. New brand launch? I am ready.”

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what your exact “quirk” is. We don’t judge. Whether you’re obsessed with helping cats or highly skilled at eavesdropping on conversations in public, all examples and stories are welcome, as long as you can poke fun at yourself.

One thing about me is that I adore this trend, along with every TikTok trend that has brought levity and joy to my For You Page recently. Give the “One Thing About Me” trend a go, and let me know what you think. I can’t wait to see what you create.
