On Wednesday, July 1, a couple took love to new heights. Chaos erupted in New York (and on the internet) after a couple climbed New York’s tallest building together to display a pro-peace message — and also get engaged. Needless to say, the internet is having a field day when it comes to making memes. (And who can blame them?)
But who are these daredevils? The couple turned out to be Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, and shockingly, this isn’t their first time pulling a stunt like this. The two are best known for their dangerous climbing adventures and participate in rooftopping — an activity where people climb up structures without using safety gear. They also starred in a 2024 Netflix documentary called Skywalkers: A Love Story.
Once the couple reached the spire, they climbed down to a platform together. Then, one of the climbers proceeded to get on one knee in front of the other to propose. (Truly, if he wanted to, he would!) The other climber said yes — because it’d honestly be wild if she said no — before sharing a sweet moment with her partner-in-literal-crime. The two shared a hug and a kiss before climbing down the building together. Once they made it down, they were taken into custody by the New York Police Department.
It does make sense that they were arrested — I mean, they literally committed the crime of trespassing — but in my honest opinion? The couple should’ve received a badge of bravery before being arrested. (Keep in mind, the Empire State Building stands at 1,454 feet. Wild.)
Shortly after the news broke, various users on X/Twitter expressed their shock and confusion. (And TBH? Same here, because a couple did what now?) Needless to say, the whole ordeal has the internet buzzing. Lots of people are taking to various social media platforms to share their opinions and reactions — in the form of hilarious memes, of course.
Meanwhile, other users are talking about how this new story is causing their expectations for their partners to soar (pun intended!). So, if you’re looking to propose any time soon, consider stepping it up a notch. Or ten.
Not to encourage trespassing, but free my boy and girl… because I need to see where they’ll get married. I mean, if they got engaged at the top of the Empire State Building, I can’t even imagine where they’ll exchange vows.
