Lose the Freshman 15: Get up and get going

Exercise is an important part of overall wellness.

But sometimes it is hard to motivate yourself to get up and go. It’s work, and it’s not easy. If it were easy, everyone would look great, and gyms would always be packed.

Personally, I prefer to exercise in the morning and get it out of the way. Plus, it’s a great way to jump-start my day. I feel refreshed after I hit the gym and ready to take on the remainder of my to-do list.

Exercising first thing in the morning sets the tone for my food choices too. If I workout early, I am more likely to make healthier food choices throughout the day because I don’t want my gym session to go to waste.

With the exception of my 7:25 a.m. class on Monday, I wake up early to hit the gym every day. Although getting out of bed is difficult sometimes, five minutes into my workout I am awake and glad I got out of bed.

Before I go to sleep, I write down everything that needs to be done the next day. This includes studying, grocery shopping, exercising and meetings. Sticking to a schedule keeps me on track, and exercise is usually the first thing I write down.

I find if I hold off exercise until the end of the day, I lose the motivation to do it. And if I’m not motivated to go to the gym, my workout is usually shorter and not as intense. By the end of the day I am tired and want to relax.

I get the most out of my workout in the morning. If I get up and go, I push myself harder and avoid the 3 p.m. gym rush when it is impossible to find a machine.

What time do you prefer to exercise?

I am a junior journalism student at the University of Florida. I am very passionate about health and fitness and hope to be a health writer or editor one day. Currently, I intern for Giggle, which is a family and parenting magazine that serves the Gainesville community. Outside of journalism I enjoy running, playing and coaching soccer, and socializing with my friends.
