Lose the Freshman 15: Crunch time

As the end of the year approaches, so do many deadlines. I’m currently working on two group projects and one individual project, all due within the next few weeks. I also have a final exam worth 90% of my grade to study for. Woof.

I really need to buckle down and focus, which has become practically impossible. All I can think about is summer and all of it’s glory — family, friends, golf, tennis, barbecues, festivals, concerts, lake houses, rollerblading, baseball games, sun tanning…. oh, and bikinis.

The end of spring semester ultimately brings two things – schoolwork stress and bikini season. And I am not ready to bare my stomach at the ARC pool (assuming that it will at some point stop raining and tornado-ing in the C-U). Realistically, I’m probably Deeg Sundeck ready, but then again last time I tanned there I was 8 pounds heavier and shamelessly stuffing my face with snacks galore (shout out #1207fatties).

Anyway, I guess what I’m really saying is it’s crunch time — and I mean that both literally and figuratively.

Since my ankle has made it difficult for me to do most forms of cardio, I’ve been doing a lot of other forms of exercise, including crunches. My favorite thing to do is play “Seniorita” by Justin Timberlake and do crunches for the full song. Yes, the song is old and only sort of good, but the tempo is seriously perfect for any type of repetitive exercise. Every four-eight counts, I switch what kind of crunch I’m doing and by the end of the 4 minutes and 54 seconds, I definitely feel the burn.

While I like this routine, I’m starting to get pretty bored and I want to try something new. I found this workout on the SELF Magazine website. Apparently Gwyneth Paltrow loves it and I don’t know if you’ve seen her on Glee recently but she is looking fit as ever.

I’m going to give it at try tomorrow, and you should too. If you do, let me know how it goes! And I’d love to hear about any other ab workouts that you think I should try. Leave a comment or tweet at me! @SamGetsHealthy

Scared of the storms,
