Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner’s Relationship Timeline Has A Shocking Update

2023 is shaping up to be the year of shocking celebrity breakups. First there was Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn calling it quits, then Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez, and now comes perhaps the most unexpected breakup news of all: Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner, after a relationship timeline that started back in 2016. Her Campus has reached out to both Jonas and Turner’s teams for comment, but did not hear back by the time of publication.

According to TODAY, Jonas filed a petition for dissolution of marriage on Sept. 5 in Miami Dade County, Florida, citing that the marriage is “irretrievably broken.” Ouch. Jonas and Turner have been married since 2019, and share two children together: Willa, born in 2020, and a second daughter whose name isn’t public, born just last year. Jonas was publicly wearing his wedding ring as recently as Sept. 4, so fans were completely blindsided by the news.

So while you’re wailing that “love isn’t real,” as we all do when news breaks of another beloved celeb couple splitting up, let’s take a walk down memory lane and remember the years that Turner and Jonas spent together.

October 2016: The couple meets on Instagram, and then in person.

According to Turner’s 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Jonas and Turner’s first interaction actually took place in the DMs. “We had a lot of mutual friends and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time. We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue,” Turner said.

They wouldn’t meet until that October, when Jonas was in town with his band DNCE to perform at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards. Turner shared in a 2020 interview with Elle that she had low expectations when she met up with him at a neighborhood bar, but he soon won her over.

“I remember the two of us spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we just found a space far in the corner and we just talked,” she recalled. “We talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I was, like, not bored. It wasn’t contrived. It wasn’t small talk — it was just so easy. And soon we were, like, inseparable. I went on tour with him.”

Dec. 7, 2016: Jonas and Turner’s relationship is officially confirmed.

After they spent Thanksgiving weekend together, rumors were swirling about their romance, leading sources to confirm to People that the two were dating exclusively. A source even shared that Jonas was “willing to settle down for her.” This also came days after Jonas was seen in London with Turner and her parents, which is a pretty major step in any romantic relationship.

Jan. 1, 2017: The couple soft-launches on Instagram.

What better way to ring in the new year than to show off your partner to all your followers? Turner posted her first pic of Jonas to Instagram on the first day of 2017 with the caption, “Miami Daze.”

Sept. 2, 2017: Jonas and Turner celebrated the first addition to their family — their dog, Porky.

Nothing says commitment like a shared pet, and Turner and Jonas were over the moon to share the news that they had adopted a dog together, named Porky Basquiat Jonas. Porky even has his own Instagram account, though it’s been dormant since 2018.

Oct. 15, 2017: Turner and Jonas announce their engagement.

You might have forgotten by now, but these two moved pretty quick at the beginning — they got engaged after just about a year of knowing each other. Jonas posted the engagement news to his Instagram with a photo of their hands and the ring, simply writing, “She said yes.”

Oct. 3, 2018: The couple makes their red carpet debut together.

The lovebirds finally made a red carpet appearance together at the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week, clad in coordinated outfits. The cutest part, though, wasn’t their looks — it was the photo Turner shared from inside the event, complete with a sweet cheek kiss.

March 1, 2019: Turner stars in the Jonas Brothers’ “Sucker” music video.

Anyone else still remember exactly where they were when this masterpiece dropped? Turner and Jonas’ careers finally overlapped when she acted in the music video for “Sucker,” the Jonas Brothers’ comeback single which came years after the band broke up. Still iconic, if you ask me, especially since she was in good company with the other Jonas wives, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Danielle Jonas.

May 1, 2019: Jonas and Turner have a surprise Vegas wedding.

Right after the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (no, like, right after — only hours had passed), Jonas and Turner held a last-minute wedding at a chapel in Vegas, and in classic Vegas fashion, the ceremony was officiated by an Elvis impersonator. Celebrity guests like Diplo, Khalid, Dan + Shay, and (of course) Kevin and Nick Jonas were in attendance, and the wedding rings were Ring pops. Sounds like the ideal wedding, TBH.

June 29, 2019: The couple has a second, more extravagant wedding in France.

Of course, it makes sense that Turner and Jonas wouldn’t want their marriage to be totally impromptu. Almost two months after their Vegas wedding, they held another ceremony in Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians, France. This time around, Turner’s Game of Thrones co-star Maisie Williams was a maid of honor, and only the couple’s closest loved ones made the invite list.

July 22, 2020: Turner and Jonas’ first child, Willa, is born.

After she was spotted out and about with a baby bump in June 2020, sources confirmed to People that Turner was pregnant with her and Jonas’ first child. Turner gave birth to their daughter, Willa, on July 22 in Los Angeles, according to sources who spoke to Entertainment Tonight. They were pretty private about Turner’s pregnancy and the birth, with Turner only sharing photos of her baby bump after Willa was born.

September 2021: The Turner-Jonas family moves to Miami.

The couple said goodbye to their $15.2 million mansion in Los Angeles and hello to an $11 million home in Miami, according to the Los Angeles Times. The family had previously been quarantining together in LA during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Jonas having said on CBS This Morning in May that he was grateful for their time together there. “To be in one place for a solid amount of time and having my feet on the ground and be with my family, my immediate family, is time I don’t think I’ll get back,” he said. “I’m so thankful and grateful.”

Meanwhile, Turner later shared with Elle UK that while she loved Miami’s weather and living near the water, “England would ideally be the final destination, but [Joe] might take quite a bit of convincing!”

May 2, 2022: Jonas and Turner appear at the Met Gala — with a baby bump.

Not only did Turner and Jonas have a great couple look at the 2022 Met Gala, but Turner showed off her baby bump, essentially announcing her second pregnancy. This is almost on par with Rihanna’s Super Bowl reveal for iconic celeb pregnancy reveals, IMO. She later officially confirmed the pregnancy in an Elle UK interview.

July 14, 2022: Their second daughter is born.

Their family once again expanded with the birth of their second daughter, almost exactly two years after Willa’s birth. Unlike with Willa, the second baby’s name has not been publicly revealed.

Aug. 12, 2023: Turner attends the Jonas Brothers’ concert in Yankee Stadium.

As of right now, Turner’s Instagram post about the concert is her most recent one, just three weeks before the news of hte divorce broke. It also appears to be their last public appearance together before the news.

Sept. 5, 2023: News breaks about Jonas filing for divorce.

Rumors had been starting up during Labor Day Weekend because Jonas had reportedly retained a divorce lawyer, but it wasn’t until Sept. 5 that he filed a petition for the dissolution of their marriage because  “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.” The children appear to be top of mind, with the petition noting that they’ve been residing with Jonas, but “it is in the best interests of the minor children that the parties have shared parental responsibility.” This news seemingly comes out of nowhere for the couple, but we’ll have to wait and see if any more details emerge.
