Is ‘Disenchanted’ Setting Things Up For A Third Movie?

2022 is the year of long-awaited movies, like the highly-anticipated sequel Disenchanted, which was released on Disney+ on Nov. 18. When the first movie, Enchanted, was released in 2007, moviegoers were introduced to the land of Andalasia. Fans quickly fell in love with Giselle, played by Amy Adams, and her fairytale romance with Robert, played by Patrick Dempsey. The movie combined reality and fantasy in a princess-meets-city plot, creating a humorous take on classy fairytale love stories. More than 10 years later, fans are ready to re-immerse themselves in the two worlds of Andalasia and New York and learn of Giselle’s world after her happily ever after with Robert.

The sequel was sure to bring forth some nostalgia as the story continues with Robert’s daughter, Morgan, as a teenager and Giselle and Robert still in love. Despite seeming like a continuation of where the movie series left off, the plot seems to put other characters’ stories at the forefront, raising questions if a new fairytale will unfold in a third movie in later years. Is Disenchanted the last you’ll see of this charming family? Spoiler warning: Spoilers for Disenchanted follow.

The movie started with the iconic Pip opening the Disenchanted fairytale to tell his children at bedtime (BTW, Pip being a father now is everything I needed and more!). It seems like he has more bedtime stories up his sleeve, though, because the shelves were filled with books — perhaps a nod to future fairytales of Giselle and her family.

Though it seemed like Giselle got everything she wanted in New York, her family was growing antsy in the city. With the new addition of their daughter Sofia, Giselle thinks it’s time to ditch the city and move to a more family-friendly (or more fairytale-like) town. Upon moving to Monroeville, Morgan is acting like every teenager ever — annoyed and stubborn. It was evident from the jump that Morgan’s story would be developed in this new movie.

Morgan was trying to get into the groove of things in this new town and Giselle just wants the best for her and the family, so she wishes for a fairytale life. Though it was a wish for the whole family, it seemed like the wish directly impacted Morgan. To jog your memory, Giselle was sent away to New York City in Enchanted by the prince’s evil stepmother so she can never get her happily ever after. Morgan’s story isn’t too far off: The wish turns into a curse, making Giselle into an evil stepmother who shields her stepdaughter from experiencing happiness.

Morgan turns out to be the heroine of the movie. In the final moments of the film, it was Morgan’s memories with Giselle and her being a “true daughter of Andalasia” that saved the fairytale land from coming to an end and snapped Giselle out of the curse. Her role is much greater in this movie, and her story seems to be unfinished.

Like Giselle in the first movie, Morgan met her own Prince Charming, Tyson. With all the curse chaos, we never got to see her love story unfold, creating a space for a future movie where Morgan gets her own happily ever after. With Giselle having to focus on being a mom, is Morgan the new main character of the Enchanted fairytales? The parallels of Giselle and Morgan’s stories are too similar to just end here.

As all bedtime stories do, this one comes to an end, but Pip was sure to leave one last hint. Before wrapping up the Disenchanted book, he says, “A new story begins.” At first glance, it seems like he was explaining the family living their happy life in Monroeville, but Disney loves a good easter egg. For instance, Flynn Rider and Rapunzel appear at Elsa’s coronation in Frozen — overlaps don’t go unnoticed.

The cast has not confirmed nor denied a third movie, but they remain excited for the world to be introduced to the new characters and cast and fall in love with their stories. In a red carpet interview at the premiere, Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays the new character Rosaleen, explains that Disenchanted reveals “you can have more than one happily ever after.” Though it’s not clear if the Enchanted movie series will see another film, Disney will keep their story alive one way or another.
