In The “Brujeria” TikTok Trend, Creators Find Joy In The Little Things

My life may literally be in shambles right now, considering I am moving out of my college house next week and am adjusting to post-grad life, but hey, at least summer is coming, right? And boba tea exists (also if you don’t like lychee in your boba tea, we need to talk), right? And there’s great television to watch right now, like Heartstopper and Bridgertonright?!

Although life can be hard sometimes (and in this economy?!), it’s important to celebrate the little things, because ultimately, that’s what life is all about — and in the viral “Brujeria” TikTok trend, creators are doing just that. Whether you want to relish in the joy of getting another small minimalist tattoo on your arm or profess your love of bagels, the “Brujeria” TikTok trend provides the perfect dose of positivity that the app — and our world — desperately needs right now.

Where did the trending sound originate?

The trending sound was originally posted by @spedlatin, a TikTok account that posts sped-up versions of Latin music. The account has currently amassed almost 90,000 followers and over one million likes. User @spedlatin originally posted the trending sound in February, which is a sped-up version of the 1979 song “Brujeria” by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. Why the sound has only blown up now remains a mystery, but hey, it’s catchy and upbeat, so I’m not complaining.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the Spanish word “brujeria” translates to “witchcraft” in English. The entire song is in Spanish, but according to English translations, the song is about a woman named María who the singer accuses of playing with his heart. According to an article published by The Feminine Musique, a blog series where writers analyze portrayals of women in music, the song “Brujeria” by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is also said to perpetuate harmful stereotypes of Latinx women pertaining to both their sexuality and womanhood

In the “Brujeria” TikTok trend, creators lives’ may be falling apart, but they’re still finding joy in the small things.

Despite the song originally being from the 1970s, creators are revamping it to fit modern times. Creators are using the trending audio to celebrate the small things, even when it seems like everything is falling apart. Whether you’re graduating college soon and have no idea what comes next or are feeling overwhelmed by your new job, there are still so many great things to look forward to, no matter how small.

User @wholepotato used the viral sound to celebrate the existence of potatoes, while creator @annaxsitar used the trend to share her excitement about her upcoming travel plans. User @themorrigan3 used the “Brujeria” TikTok trend to say that even though her life is in shambles, she has her little daydreams to keep her going, while @chiaror.gey shared her love of baking.

Trying the “Brujeria” TikTok trend is easy.

Unlike the popular “I’m Sat” TikTok trend, where several creators literally broke their bed frames to participate in the viral trend, the “Brujeria” TikTok trend is both easy and painless to try out. To try the trend, think of something that sparks a bit of joy in your life — for me, that would be my daily French press coffee that I make — and get to filming. You can start the video by adding text that says, “My life literally falling apart,” and then, when the beat changes, add whatever brings you joy — no matter how small it may be!
