At this point, anything I learn about celebrity couples is against my will. But nevertheless, there’s that persistent part of my brain that absolutely has to know what’s up. Because of this, I have to tell you some news, Avril Lavigne and Tyga are officially dating. Read that again. I seriously wish I was kidding.
On March 6, Lavigne and Tyga were spotted kissing at the Mugler X Hunter Schafer party during Paris Fashion Week. Before their internet-breaking smooch, they were seen together at Nobu Malibu on Feb. 19, but considering she was in a relationship at the time, the internet chalked this up to an unlikely friendship duo. Now, the official announcement of this coupling may come as a shock to you — as it did for me — because Lavigne was previously engaged to punk-rocker Mod Sun. The two were first linked in January 2021 and continued until they called off their engagement on Feb. 28, 2023.
The internet is absolutely losing it over this couple, but not for the reason you’d expect. Sure, the two are an unlikely duo, but they’re actually way more similar than any of us realize: both Tyga and Lavigne have played supporting roles in the Kardashian-Jenner Multiverse in the past. Looks like they both have a type, and that type is KarJenners.
Back in 2010, Lavigne dated Kendall and Kylie’s half-brother, Brody Jenner, and was even spotted on double dates with Kim Kardashian and Kris Humpries around 2011. The pair broke up in 2012, with Jenner claiming that Lavigne’s rockstar lifestyle broke up the relationship.
As for Tyga, the rapper was connected to Kylie Jenner from 2011 until 2017 in what seemed like an on-and-off relationship. The two seemed to call it quits when Jenner went public with Travis Scott in April 2017. As if the web couldn’t get more complicated, Tyga also fathered a son with Rob Kardashian’s ex-girlfriend, Blac Chyna, in 2012. Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian also have a child together, which makes this whole dating/family dynamic even stranger, IMHO.
So, in case you’re confused, here’s the breakdown: Tyga is Lavigne’s ex-boyfriend’s half-sister’s ex-boyfriend. Not to mention, Tyga is also the father of the half-sibling to Lavigne’s ex-boyfriend’s former stepbrother’s daughter. To put it in true Avril Lavigne fashion, it’s “Complicated.”
Will this couple outlast the tests of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians fandom? I really wish I could tell you, but only time will tell. Until more juicy details come out, you and I will just have to sit around and wait to be inundated with headlines. Because if there’s anything I know, it’s that learning about this musical pair is something none of us can avoid, no matter how hard we may try.
