3 Signs You Nailed the Interview

There’s no greater feeling than leaving a job interview filled with confidence. Interviews can be unpredictable, but there are certain signs you should look out for during the interview process to see how well you did. Before you freak out about how you answered each interview question, see if you can recognize these signs you actually nailed the interview

1. The employer asked for references.


You may think that employers don’t actually contact your references, but that isn’t necessarily true. Barry Drexler, expert interview coach, says that “companies don’t spend the time to check references if they’re not interested in hiring you.” If you’re asked for references during the interview, it’s a good sign you’re being seriously considered for the position!

Tip: Make sure you have a reliable list of references before an interview. Some applications also ask for references beforehand, so be sure to include people who can clearly identify your strengths in the workplace.

2. The interview takes longer than expected.


If your meeting lasts a long time, that means the employer was interested in learning more about you! Employers don’t usually waste time if they think you won’t be a good fit. The longer the interview goes, the better your chances of being hired!

Tip: Keep the conversation flowing; don’t rush through your questions and answers. If an employer is taking his or her time to interview you, take your time trying to impress him or her.

3. The employer wants to meet again.


According to Drexler, “the employer taking the time to arrange another office visit in person sends the message that the interview went well.” Arranging another office visit while you’re there proves the employer wants to see more of you! Don’t think he or she only wants to see you again because he or she can’t make a decision about whom to hire. Instead, consider this a sign that the employer is interested in what you can bring to the table. A second meeting further heightens your probability of being hired.

Tip: Make sure you have a planner with you so you can schedule another meeting on the spot. This shows that you’re organized as well as interested in the job.


Employers are looking for candidates who are hardworking, confident and motivated. Your resume may have helped you get the interview, but communicating face-to-face is where you can really shine. If you be yourself and stay positive, you may be one step closer to landing your dream job!
