Hello! My name is Kayla and I am a first-year graduate student at NC State University. I am working towards my M.A. in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition. I hope to pursue a career in secondary education or some sort of professional writing after I graduate. Engaging with my community has always brought me so much joy, and I would love to participate in it through a teaching or journalism lens. My longterm career goal is to eventually get my PhD and become a professor; nothing makes me happier than being on a university's campus!
My interests outside of school mostly orbit around what I am studying. I love to read and write, and to answer the question that always follows this assertion—No, I can't choose a favorite book, there's just too many. My favorite book I've read so far this year, however, is probably Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. When it comes to writing, I'm interested in it all, but I mostly find myself writing in poetry or essay form in my free time. I've begun to explore research and proposal writing as I venture further into graduate school, and I find that I quite enjoy that as well. I've also been working on my own novel, a personal project of mine that I hope to one day finish!
Besides the obvious English-major hobbies, I love to ride my bike, go hiking, travel to new places, and eat sandwiches I've never tried before (and sandwiches I have tried before). I love experiencing what the world around me has to offer, and I love capturing it, whether that be through journaling, storytelling, scrapbooking, drawing, or reminiscing with a friend :)
